This study is aimed at understanding the piece, Wanderer Fantasie Op. 15, by Austrian composer Franz Peter Schubert (1797 – 1828) representing the 19th century Romanticism.
The fantasy has four movements in similar structure of a piano sonata which is comprised of sonata-allegro form, variations, Scherzo and fugue, however, the four sections are connected together. There is a single basic motive, which all the movements share and from which all themes are developed. Below are some marked features of the fantasy found through this study.
The four movements of Wanderer Fantasie Op. 15 are organically connected to one another mainly on the basis of a melody taken from Der Wanderer D. 493, which Schubert wrote in 1816. From the perspective of melody, the fantasy is splendidly based on the arpeggios and chromatic scales. Italso has a variety of musical effects due to the identical melodies which become variations in each movement.
The rhythm, the main rhythmic motive taken from Der Wanderer D. 493, remains consistent throughout all the movements unifying the piece as a whole. On the other hand, the harmony is more varied with the use of diminished 7th chords, augmented 6th chords, and modulations.
Consequently, by adding lyrical melodies and unique chords to his works, Schubert can be regarded as having explored a new side of Romantic music of the 19thcentury. From this perspective, Wanderer Fantasie Op. 15 embodies Schubert’s most ingenious and original features.
