ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of the personality type, exercise stress and athletic burnout of high school athletes. The subjects in this study were 436 high school athletes who registered with athletic associations for different sporting events. The instrument used to gather data was an inventory that covered personality type A, achievement goal orientation, basic psychological needs and social support(personality type), and another inventory was utilized, which covered exercise stress and athletic burnout. The collected data were analyzed by the statistical package SPSS WIN 19.0K, and reliability analysis, validity analysis, descriptive statistics analysis, frequency analysis, independent-samples t-test and one-way ANOVA were utilized. Besides, Scheffe post-hoc analysis was made to look for intergroup gaps, and multiple regression analysis was carried out to determine the relationship among personality type, exercise stress and athletic burnout. The findings of the study were as follows: First, the boy athletes had stronger basic psychological needs and were given more social support(p<.001, p<.01), and the girl athletes suffered more exercise stress and athletic burnout(p<.001, p<.01). Stronger basic psychological needs were found among the athletes who were in the lower grades(p<.001), and heavier exercise stress was found among the athletes who were in the upper grades(p<.05). The athletes of individual events had less basic psychological needs than those of team events(p<.001, p<.01), and the former suffered more exercise stress(p<.01). Second, type A, which was one of personality types, and achievement goal orientation had a positive impact on exercise stress and athletic burnout(p<.001), and basic psychological needs and social support exerted a negative influence on the two(p<.001). The athletes who were more achievement-goal-oriented and whose personality was more similar to type 1 were more likely to suffer exercise stress and athletic burnout. Third, exercise stress had a positive relationship to athletic burnout(p<.001). The findings of the study were discussed from both theoretical and empirical perspectives in comparison with the findings of earlier studies.
