Abstract
It is important to see our educational problems in today's modern westernized education but it may be quite significant to search our own traditional educational institute and examine its educational contents for studying the development of education. That is to say, such examination of traditional educational methods and contents can be a mirror for us to look into today's educational phenomenon and education theories. Above, the study on the educational institute might be really important in the history of education. In this study, it may be inferred what lessons traditional education, and Seodang education in particular give to today's elementary, middle and high school education by investigating history, operation, educational contents and methods of traditional educational institute, especially Seodang.
Seodang's educational methods have quite a lot of factors that may be applicable to today's education. Students had difference paces of learning depending on their abilities and were able to acquire the contents of studies sufficiently through repetition. Most Seodangs educated a small number of students not like those of today's large classes so that individually customized education was possible in the form of mastery.
Moreover, Seodang had an educational system to achieve the academic goals through active mutual interactions between teachers and students and also among students. Such active mutual interactions through questions and answers helped them cooperate and form their whole personality other than the acquirement of knowledge.
Besides, Seodangs were not controlled by the government so that the fundamental goal of each was to cultivate morality and put ethics into action even though each Seodang has different educational contents and methods. It was able to consolidate the Confucian statecraft and to cultivate talented scholars with moral personality through the Seodang education.
Moreover, there was an effective education for each season and also through plays. There was an effective education proper for each season: spring, summer, fall and winter. Especially, in the hot summer, the so-called 'hagua'(summer school), chodang(outdoor classroom) was built and students studied outdoors. In addition, there was an education through plays aiming for young students to stimulate their academic curiosity.
Finally, Seodang is related to self-directed learning that might help people adapt themselves to the 21st century society with globalization and information. 'sunnseongchuk' and 'gaengsingo' can be examples of Seodang education's good educational method in which students set up their own plans to resolve problems, so related to today's self-directed learning.
Thus, Seodang education from the Joseon Dynasty has a lot of implications for today's education. Mastery learning, learner-centered education, attitude education and learning as a way of life are all significant educational themes not to be missed. For a desirable development of education, the previous educational system must be actively accepted and succeed and develop our own unique traditions. The sentence that reads, "What is most Korean is most universal." can be applicable to the field of education as well. In order to do so, more studies on the detailed teaching model must be conducted that may utilize only the strengths of the Seodang education to be applicable to the real classrooms.
