The purpose of this study was to investigate factors affecting performance of lunge motions, focusing on the mechanism the body uses to absorb the propulsion. Kinetic, kinematic analyses as well as analyzing the degree of elasticity in the joints were performed.
To investigate such factors, this study targeted 14 subjects who were skilled in fencing. A kick lunge motions required the subject to move as far from their initial starting point as possible in two types and had the subjects to perform such motions with dominant leg and non-dominant leg. Three-dimensional motion capture system, GRF measurement system and EMG measurement system were used to draw the results of this study. The results were as follows.
First, the performance time for motion of dominant leg was around 13% shorter than that of non-dominant leg and the performance time of motions performed after pre-stretch of muscle and countermovement were around 6% shorter than those without such precedent motion. Such results indicated that motions of dominant leg could be more adapt in a high performance situation than non-dominant leg. Similarly the pre-stretch of muscle and countermovement could raise the efficiency of the lunge.
Second, the results of displacement of pelvis-centered movement and the rate of movement showed that muscle activation was very important in performing lunge motions.
Third, angular displacement of low limb joints and changing forms of angular velocity did not show substantial differences between dominant leg and non-dominant leg. It indicated that development of motions of dominant leg and that of non-dominant leg were the same and it assumed its reason was that development process of motions of dominant leg trained for long time emulated that of non-dominant leg. However, there was a difference in motions of low limb for dimensions of kinematic variables and it was considered that such results came from a difference in motion-using ability, that is, an ability of using muscles.
Fourth, muscle-recruiting ability of dominant leg was better than that of non-dominant leg (around 20%). Joint moment and power were the major factors to determine dimensions of kinematic variables so it was considered that these could be adjusted by an appropriate using ability of muscle recruitment.
Fifth, a role of support legs that maintained body balance in the process of reproducing recuperative propulsion of lunge motions and provided driving force to create initial propulsion in performing lunge motions was considered to be critical.
Sixth, as a skill level of motions increased, movement of body developed to reduce the impulse gained from performing motions and one of such developed changes was considered to be applied as a mechanism for reducing the time of motion performance.
Seventh, it was considered that a degree of elasticity of quantitatively evaluated joints applied linearly to position control of actual motions and performance ability.
In conclusion, it was considered that there was no significant difference in forms of development between dominant limb and non-dominant limbs. It was thought that control of muscle contraction as a main factor to determine lunge performance. Especially for a skilled fencer selected as a subject of this study took continuous lateral practices as required by fencing and such properties of bodily development were regarded as being reflected in realization of lunge performance. Moreover, it was considered that elastic constituents which were the muscle’s own property served the performance of bodily motions with each degree. This study was a basic research for a performance of sportive movements and the factors affecting the performance and this could be utilized as a basic material for developed researches on efficiency of motions, improvement of performance and motion coordination in sportive movements.
