ABSTRACT The Effectiveness Analysis of the Activities and the Balance of e-Book learners’ Brains Arang O Department of Applied IT Technology The Graduate School of Venture Hoseo University Korea (Supervised by professor Nammee Moon) This study described the analysis of the activities and the balance of e-Book learners’ brains and compare them with the results of a paper book. To do this, first of all, we found the individual characteristics of e-Book learners according to sex, media preference which they chose, internet surfing time and reading time which they had spent, and also analyzed how to influence the activities of our left and right side brain. Then we had an experiment to determine how to get the balance when we read an e-Book. We selected two experiment groups of 12 elementary students who consisted of the equal number of boys and girls and classified as one e-Book group and the other paper group. Before we took an experiment, we did the questionnaire to get each learner’s feature and compared the raw data with the measurement from the EEG(electroencephalogram) result among the first part, middle part and last part of each group’s reading period. From the results of our left and right brain experiment at the e-Book case despite of negative effects on the reading time, we can achieve the positive effects on the activities of learners’ sex and media preference, although we can get the negative effects on the reading time. The sex aspect was positive effects on our left side brain while the reading time had negative effects. But when we can see the reading group at the paper book, it showed that the reading time had positive effects on the left side. Compared with the brain wave’s results of raw data during reading, the average frequency of an e-Book group and sex aspects did not show the difference between left and right brain, Considering with this result, we found our brain used had the balance to the e-Book learners, while in a paper group, the left side brain had the dominant over right side one at theta, alpha and beta waves. At the comparison about time periods of brain waves, the e-Book reading group showed the variation(increase and/or decrease) of theta and alpha waves during first, middle and last periods and the overall graph about brain waves was indicated ups and downs. In the time periods of a paper group, the theta waves of right brain were the lowest, and those of left brain had the highest. However, when we considered the total graph of brain waves, if only had a little, minor change. In conclusion, we can see that in case of e-Book, each learner’s characteristics had significant effects on the activities and the balance of both sides of brain. On the other hand, in case of paper book, the left sides brain was superior to the right brain each learner’s characteristics had dominanting affected to the left brain, comparing to the right brain. We knew that the difference of brain waves between e-Book and paper book was from each learner’s feature and media preference.
