A study on the school adaptation of child in poor families : focused on the moderating effect of ego-resilience원문보기

The influence of poverty on children is much more than just economic difficulty during their growth. Many of them are suffering from the lack of growth as their parents cannot afford to supply appropriate environment for their growth, which leads to a vicious cycle of poverty after they are grown up. Regarding this phenomenon, there have consistently been studies on children of poverty, especially to observe what protections are required for the children to overcome a lack of physical environment and to adapt to school adequately. In this situation, this paper is aimed to examine the overall tendency in the school life of the children of poverty, compare the level of their adaptation to school with that of the average children's and study the role of ego-resilience in the poor children's adaptation to school. To conduct a proper study, from 4th to 6th grade students were divided into the children in a poor family and the children in an average family to observe their school adaptation. The results and meanings of this study are as follows. First, the children in a poor family are not good at adapting to school compared with the children in an average family. The results are the same in several aspects; the relationship with teachers and friends, curriculum study and their attitude in keeping the rules of school. Regardless of their economic situation, the children were poor at controling their emotions which is one of the subordinate factors in the school adaptation. Second, based on the observation of the differences among the children in adapting to school according to the level of ego-resilience, it was found that the adaptation of the children to school life is proportionate to their ego-resilience regardless of their economic situation. It can be concluded that ego-resilience is one of the vital factors for children. The good effects of the ego-resilience on the adaptation to school, however, was more strong on the average children than on the poor children. That is, the ego-resilience plays a more important role in the life of the average children than that of the poor children. Third, there are limitations of ego-resilience in the situation of poverty. Unlike the studies indicating that the ego-resilience can be an internal factor as a psychological anti-shocking material in a dangerous situation, this study found that the effect is stronger in a usual situation. It was additionally found that the ego-resilience inherently has a limitation in a poor environment, even though it is useful itself. This means that the influence of poverty on children is so strong that it is difficult for the ego-resilience to have stronger effects in a poor environment than in an average environment, and the poverty which is an environmental factor is more influential on children than the ego-resilience. In other words, the positive and protective factor is lessened due to a risk factor, and the ego-resilience cannot weaken the risk factor. In conclusion, the result of the study showing that the ego-resilience cannot contribute to the children's adaptation to school indicates that the more aggressive role of the ego-resilience is required, not that it is just a useless factor based on the wrong conclusion that the ego-resilience makes adaptation more difficult in a poverty situation.
