Abstract Comparison of Fatigue and Depression Between Shift and Non-shift Nurses Kim Gui-Ok Graduate School of Nursing Catholic University of Pusan Director : Professor Kang, So-Young, PhD, RN. The purpose of this research was to examine differences in the level of fatigue and depression that nurses perceive between shift work and non-shift work for taking care for patient at a hospital. Research subjects were 280 nurses working for at least 3 months at a general hospital in city U with patient care as the main responsibility. Data were collected from May 4, 2012 to May 11, 2012 with a structured questionnaire including items of Fatigue Instrument developed by the Industrial Fatigue Research Committee of Japan Association of Industrial Health(1988) and those of Korean-version of CES-D(The Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression Scale). Data were analyzed using SPSS WIN 20.0 statistics program, using descriptive statistics, Chi-test, t-test and ANOVA. Results of the study were as follows. 1) The demographics of the participants showed that 72.1% was under the age of 31, 98.9% were female, 78.1% of nurses were unmarried, and 60.4% were not religious. For the level of education, 82.9% graduated from a three-year college, 45.2% had a monthly income between 2.5~3 million KRW, 39.3% had less than 3 years of nursing experience, 83.6% were general nurses, and the period working in the current unit was less than 24 months at 38.2%. 2) On a 4-point scale, the average fatigue of the participants was 1.75±0.50. Physical fatigue was the highest at 1.99±0.50, followed by mental fatigue at 1.75±0.57, and neuro-sensory fatigue at 1.51±0.50. The average score for depression was 17.45±8.50 out of a total of 60 points. 3) There was a significant difference(t=2.768, p=.006) in fatigue between shift nurses(1.52±0.37) and non-shift nurses(1.39±0.35). Physical fatigue(t=2.875, p=.004), mental fatigue(t=2.320, p=.021), and neuro -sensory fatigue(t=2.540, p=.012) all had a significant difference. There was a significant difference(t=2.296, p=.022) in depression between shift nurses(18.13±8.43) and non-shift nurses(15.49±8.45). 4) In terms of fatigue depending on general characteristics, for shift nurses, characteristics with significant differences were age(t=3.120, p=.002), level of education(t=2.314, p=.022), income level(F=5.225, p=.006), nursing experience(F=7.098, p=.001), and position(t=3.081, p=.002), while non-shift nurses had no characteristics showing significant differences. In terms of depression depending on general characters, shift nurses had significant differences in depression depending on age(t=3.089, p=.002), level of education (t=2.568, p=.011), income level (F=6.851, p=.001), nursing experience (F=4.055, p=.019), and position (t=3.525, p=.001) while non-shift nurses did not have any categories with significant differences. Based on the above results of this study, shift-work patterns is an important determinant of fatigue and depression. Since a majority of nurses are working in a shift schedule, it seems that developing management programs to prevent and alleviate fatigue and depression in shift nurses, and various shift-work patterns considering diurnal rhythms are needed.
