The purpose of this paper is to study on the theological implications in Kyrie and Gloria among the Bach's Mass through the analysis of Musical Rhetoric. For this, I will examine music of the baroque period, the periodical background of Musical Rhetoric, beforehand and study on the formation of Musical Rhetoric and its contents. But before that, I intend to examine the background forming this theory and periodical situation because to realize thoughts and spirits of the period some artistic work was made is important as much as to realize the work itself. And then, I will analyze Kyrie and Gloria of five music, among the Bach's Mass, under Musical Rhetoric. I intend to focus on how the theological implications included in lyrics are expressed, rather than finding and analyzing figures for the purpose of this paper. The relationship between music and rhetoric theory was already mentioned by A. Quintilianus(35-96) in ancient times. In Gregorian Chant and Renaissance music, we can find the trial intending to express lyrics with note easily. But there was just a situation but the theory was not established. This situation was also showed in various musical systems of Renaissance, such as ‘seconda prattica’, musical symbolism, ‘Affektenlehre’, etc. In about 1600, Joachim Burmeister(1566?-1629) combined music with rhetoric theory systematically, named the musical theories which had been formed till then and explained them. In this process, the word of rhetoric theory was introduced so many concepts of rhetoric theory flowed in music and structural system of Music Rhetoric was formed. In addition, the expressional aspect of Music Rhetoric was established under the sway of various musical theories which had been showed since the Renaissance, such as ‘Affektenlehre’, musical symbolism, ‘Figurenlehre’, etc. Johann Sebastian Bach was born in 1685, the heyday of the Baroque culture. He was an excellent composer, a performing musician and a good believer. He was familiar with Music Rhetoric and expressed his own emotion and faith with it. Various methods of Music Rhetoric was helpful to express not only lyrics content but also the things which was not shown in lyrics. So there are many symbols and implications behind of notes shown in Bach's works. This paper intends to study on the part expressing his own piety and theology, among lots of implications of Bach's Mass. The objects of study are ‘Missa brevis(BWV233-236)’ including only Kyrie and Gloria generally as well as Kyrie and Gloria among B minor Mass(BWV232) composing the whole ordinary of the Mass. In other words, among Bach's Mass, the objects of this paper are Kyrie and Gloria. By analyzing these works under Musical Rhetoric, I will study on his own piety and theology he intended to express, behind the notes. His religious belief or theology is not shown in the scores. But he expressed them in his music and descendants not only enjoy the beauty of notes themselves but also continue in the faith strongly through his works. I hope that his piety included in lots of his works is studied and interpreted more so it shines us who are standing on the road to God.
