The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of storytelling activities to the language ability improvement of children with mild intellectual disabilities. The subjects include three children with mild intellectual disabilities aged from 7 to 9 who were receiving treatment at A language Pathology Center in B City. A program was administered to them over two sessions, each of which lasted for 40 minutes. Total 20 sessions were given over 10 weeks. A pre-test and post-test were conducted to test the children's language ability improvement, which was presented in tables and graphs. The application of a storytelling program led to the following results : First, storytelling activities had impacts on the vocabulary improvement of the children with mild intellectual disabilities with small differences among them. The activities promoted vocabulary improvement in the children with a medium of verbal expression called storytelling. In addition, the various connection activities induced the children to participate in the program with interest and easily learn vocabulary. Second, storytelling activities also had impacts on the speaking skills of the children with mild intellectual disabilities. In the course of the program, the visual materials provided were connected to the diverse expressions of their feelings after storytelling, thus helping them learn colloquial expressions and improve in the speaking areas assessed in the pre-test and post-test. Finally, the language activities with a storytelling program helped all the subject children with mild intellectual disabilities increase their reading skills, which indicates that the children naturally had a new understanding of letters in the course of a storytelling program. In short, storytelling activities have positive effects on the language abilty improvement of children with mild intellectual disabilities including vocabulary, speaking, and reading.
