한국인 학습자의 영어 비대격 동사 과잉 수동화 : 언어적 요소 및 인지적 요소의 상대적 영향을 중심으로 Overpassivization of Unaccusative Verbs by Korean Learners of English:Focusing on the Relative Effects of Linguistic and Cognitive Factors원문보기

This dissertation focuses on the causes of overpassivization errors in the acquisition of English unaccusative verbs by Korean learners of English. More specifically, this study examines how various factors, such as verb alternation, subject animacy, context type, and the first language (L1) morphological transfer, play roles in Korean learners' overpassivization with English unaccusative verbs. It has been reported in second language (L2) literature that overpassivization errors with English unaccusative constructions are prevalent among Korean L2 learners as well as L2 learners from various L1 backgrounds (Balcom, 1997; Hwang, 1999, 2001; Ju, 2000; Oshita, 2000, 2001; Yip, 1994, 1995; Zobl, 1989). The causes of this phenomenon have been analyzed predominantly from the syntactic view by many researchers (Balcom, Oshita, Yip, Zobl). However, as different error patterns have been observed among different unaccusative verbs in terms of overpassivization in recent studies, second language acquisition (SLA) researchers have tried to relate this phenomenon to diverse factors (Croft, 1995; Ju, Montrul, 1999, 2000, 2001; No & Chung, 2006). Among them, the following four factors are discussed as major sources affecting overpassivization in the L2 literature: verb alternation, subject animacy, context type, and L1 morphological transfer, representing syntactic, semantic, cognitive, and interlingual fields respectively. In addition to analyzing the main effects of these four factors on Korean L2 learners' overpassivization, this study also attempts to examine if there exist any relative effects among these factors. Two different grammaticality judgment tasks (GJTs) were administered to a group of 70 Korean college participants. Specifically, the GJT A focuses on investigating the effects of verb alternation, subject animacy, and context type. On the other hand, the GJT B focuses mainly on investigating the effects of L1 morphological transfer. The relative effects among the four factors were examined by investigating their effect sizes. The results of the GJT A showed that all of the three factors above had considerable effects on overpassivization with English unaccusative verbs by Korean L2 learners. Specifically, the participants produced more passivized errors with alternating unaccusative verbs than with nonalternating unaccusative ones. They also produced more passivized errors when the subject of unaccusative verbs is inanimate rather than when it is animate. Moreover, they produced more passivized errors when a conceptualizable agent is clear than when it is not in a discourse. The results of the GJT B showed that L1 morphological transfer had a significant effect on overpassivization errors with English unaccusative verbs by Korean L2 learners. Specifically, the participants of this task produced more passive constructions with unaccusative verbs that have passive morphemes in their L1 (Korean) translations than with unaccusative verbs that do not. When dvalues of the four factors were calculated to compare their relative effects, the L1 morphological transfer factor was found to have the strongest effect, followed by context type. This result seems to indicate that the participants of this study experienced the most difficulty in judging the grammatical constructions of English unaccusative verbs that have passive morphemes in their L1 translations.
