As the world gets globalized, English is now serving as a lingua franca across many parts of the world, not a language used only in some countries. Therefore, the goal of English education has come to emphasize developing the students’ attitude and abilities to become leaders in a global world. To help students build diverse perspectives and community spirit as a world citizen, it is important for textbooks to describe people and societies from an objective and fair point of view. English textbooks, in particular, have a significant effect on forming students’ values of the target culture, so they should to the furthest extent possible portray people from different backgrounds and characteristics in an impartial way with bias-free language. This study analyzed whether current English textbooks are describing the marginalized groups fairly in terms of linguistic and non-linguistic aspects. In addition, by checking how well English learners are aware of the biased language, the study examined if an appropriate culture and vocabulary instruction is being practiced in the field of English education. Through this analysis, the study aims at identifying biased elements in English textbooks, and at raising teacher awareness of the necessity to educate students about bias-free language. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to help English learners to have diverse perspectives needed in a global society and develop their attitude as a world citizen that enables cooperation and co-existence with people who have different characteristics. To achieve this goal, eight kinds of high school textbooks were analyzed and an awareness examination was carried out on 184 students in a high school. The results of the textbook analysis and awareness examination are as follows. Firstly, there were discriminatory elements in the characters that appear in the passages of examined textbooks. The majority groups of society including men, Caucasians and non-diabled people appeared more often compared to the minority groups of society such as women, African Americans and people with disabilities. It shows that English textbooks are not free from the mainstream perspectives that exist in society. By featuring more individuals with different backgrounds and characteristics, textbooks will be able to help students to get a diverse point of view. Secondly, the textbooks showed stereotypes in the occupation types of the marginalized groups. Not only were there less women working than men in the textbooks, but female characters were more frequently described as a ruled class and less frequently described as a ruling class in comparison to male characters. Similarly, Asians and African Americans were also more frequently described as a ruled class and less frequently described as a ruling class than Caucasians. Also, the textbooks didn’t describe any of the five identified characters with disabilities as having jobs. Textbooks need to describe the marginalized groups as more enterprising and leading people so that students do not internalize social stereotypes towards them. Thirdly, there appeared discrimination in the language used in textbooks as well. As a result of attempts to use more bias-free language in the textbook, explicitly biased or pejorative expressions were not used very much. However, there still existed implicit bias towards marginalized groups, such as showing stereotypes of gender roles and describing disabilities as an abnormal state. In addition, while the biased words that have been discussed over a long time were removed from the textbooks, but those that have been discussed more recently were still being used. Through continuous attention and study of English-speaking societies, textbooks should be able to reflect more recent trends in bias-free language. Lastly, the results of awareness examination reveal that students are aware of the biased language by less than 70 percent on average. Especially their awareness of disability-related words was lower than others, implying the relation to the fact that people with disabilities seldom appear in the textbooks. Meanwhile, students’ awareness of the biased language was more related to the gender of students rather than their study level; female students were more aware of the biased language than male students. This result implies that even though your English ability is higher, it doesn’t mean that your awareness of the bias-free language is similarly high. Therefore, additional culture and vocabulary education in English class should be practiced in order to develop students’ sociolinguistic competence so they can choose appropriate expressions while communicating in English. In conclusion, this study has found both linguistic and non-linguistic elements of discrimination appearing in English textbooks. Although there have been attempts to improve the conditions, English textbooks have not yet acquired complete fairness, and students’ awareness of biased language was also low. When it becomes time to revise the textbooks, those discriminatory aspects should be removed. English textbooks play an important role in developing students’ ability to communicate in fair, non-discriminatory, and unbiased ways. In order to improve students’ community spirit needed to qualify as world citizens, we must pay close attention to both explicit and implicit biases, stereotyping, and discriminatory elements of English language learning materials.
