The acceleration in the rate of the world economy growth and the consequently widened global trade network have led to an increasing demand for transporting goods. The explosion of global trade has also been accompanied by the increase in the use of containers as a safe and inexpensive mode of transport for goods. A container, fully loaded with goods from the shipper (the customer of a shipping company), is transported across the ocean to the destination port and delivered to the consignee for unloading. Subsequently, the container is usually emptied and stored at the destination port until it is required for another consignment. Unfortunately, the number of import containers is not always equal to that of export containers. When there is an imbalance in the number of import and export containers, some ports have a surplus of empty containers, while others have a deficit. In order to reduce the imbalance, shipping companies must then reposition empty containers from surplus ports to deficit ports or they have to lease or purchase empty containers for those deficit ports. Thus, empty container repositioning is an important activity of a shipping company. This thesis aims to discuss three emerging issues of empty container repositioning in ocean transportation. Firstly, we consider the problem of repositioning empty containers with leasing and purchasing consideration. The goal of this study is to propose a plan for transporting empty containers between container ports (terminals) to reduce the imbalance. There is currently a great demand at each port and any backlog of containers is not permitted. The objective is to minimize the total relevant costs such as transportation cost, handling cost, and storage cost, etc. In this study, we develop a model with respect to the short-term leasing and purchasing of containers. Mixed integer programming and genetic algorithms are used to solve the model. A hybrid GA is also proposed to reduce the computation time while still obtaining an acceptable result. Secondly, a study is conducted to provide a decision tool for planning the expansion of depot capacity. A mathematical model is utilized to minimize the total relevant costs that include the capacity expansion cost, storage space leasing cost, storage cost, container leasing cost, and repositioning cost. The problem is formulated as a mixed integer programming. Then, we develop a heuristic algorithm that is based on Lagrangian relaxation. Computational experiments are conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm. Finally, we consider the utilization of foldable containers. Repositioning empty containers is one of the most effective ways to solve this problem. However, empty container repositioning is costly. Methods for reducing the repositioning cost have been examined recently by major shipping companies. Foldable containers have been introduced in order to decrease the repositioning cost; for the same volume, a larger number of foldable containers can be transported as compared to standard containers. Foldable containers can be used to achieve a space saving of more than 75% relative to standard containers. Foldable (or collapsible) containers are available in several designs. This study compares the repositioning cost involved when foldable containers are used as opposed to that when standard containers are used. Mathematical models are utilized to minimize the total relevant cost, which includes the folding/unfolding cost, storage cost, handling cost, container leasing cost, and repositioning cost. Heuristic algorithms are proposed to solve the mathematical models. Several scenarios are introduced as numerical experiments to demonstrate the economic feasibility of foldable containers
