This study is intended to compare and analyze Samulnori that delineates the rhythmic characteristics of Korean traditional music and Byeolshin-gut in eastern coast of Korea that has unexpected improvisation and the change of rhythm. Byeolshin-gut in eastern coast of Korea is a free type of music that changes every moment depending on improvisation. Therefore, the complexity of rhythmic structure and splendor of technical skills are transcending. Samulnori is played based on beat structure that is made by diversified rhythmic patterns but is also a type of music that is well controlled on a regular and formulaic manner. Hereupon, this study is intended to identify similarity and difference by analyzing particular melody in Byeolshin-gut and Samulnori in an objective of applying various types of melody of Byeolshin-gut to the Samulnori and to consider a unique melody of Byeolshin-gut in eastern coast of Korea to derive a specific melody that can be utilized in the Samulnori. As for the method, melodies used by Yongtaek Kim, the man of artistic ability of Byeolshin-gut in eastern coast of Korea, and Yongbae Kim, the creator of Samulnori were used in the study restricting the scope into 'Gutguri Rhythm' and 'Jajinmori Rhythm' for the analysis.
As a result, first of all, 'Gutguri Rhythm' played by Yongbae Kim consists of total 50 melodies in four distinct structures, while the one played by Yongtaek Kim is based on total 33 melodies in nine structures. Gutguri played by Yongbae Kim is played with melodies structured in a repetitive and sequential basis that can be compared to the crest in the wave. In addition, grace notes and particular instantaneous moments for playing instruments might be changed that a performing artist can gradually play even with rhythm in a same structure. On the other hand, Gutguri played by Yongtaek Kim has only two melodies in a same structure and rhythm, and delicate style of playing and a change in the rhythm represent diversity of the music to the end by utilizing grace and dotted notes even in a same structure. Especially, the structure of 'Honsobak' is diversified and improvised providing irregular changes to the music. Hereupon, it is assumed that a deep structure is inherent in the play of instruments specifically shown with a unique structure and play style in the eastern coaster of Korea.
Secondly, 'Jajinmori Rhythm' played by Yongbae Kim consists of total 157 melodies in six distinct structures, while the one played by Yongtaek Kim is based on total 154 melodies in nine structures. 'Jajinmori play' by Yongbae Kim, same as Gutguri, is with melodies structured in a repetitive and sequential basis that can be compared to the crest in the wave. In addition, beat of the music gradually increases that grace notes and specific moments of playing the instrument for melodies become simplified. After playing an introductory part of Jajinmori, rhythm is played without repetition differing from each structure. In addition, repetitive rhythm is played in a part with an increasing beat.
On the other hand, 'Jajinmori Play' by Yongtaek Kim, same as Gutguri, is with delicate style of playing and a change in the rhythm representing diversity of the music to the end. Especially, a change of crest is not regarded to a regular pattern. In addition, a change of two different methods of playing instruments, namely, pushing method and side-hitting method, is diversified, and a structure of the music is played based on improvisation. Therefore, it is assumed that a deep structure is inherent in the play of Jajinmori as a specific method with a unique structure and style of play.
Third, Gutguri and Jajinmori played by Yongtaek Kim and Yongbae Kim are based on ×4beats as a basic structure gradually increasing the speed of the play and specific moment of playing the instrument of 'Honsobak.' In addition, a similar rhythmic form of a unique way of playing the instrument by Yongtaek Kim is also found in the play by Yongbae Kim. However, it was confirmed that they have a different vocal sound system with a delicate style of playing the instrument and the size of strength.
Fourth, according to a result of analysis on Byeolshin-gut in the eastern coast of Korea played by Yongtaek Kim and Samulnori played by Yongman Kim, a unique melody played only by Yongtaek Kim has been identified. Especially, it is distinguished with a unique style of playing 'Honsobak' in a different form on a continuous basis.
According to the result of study, it has turned out that Byeolshin-gut in the eastern coast of Korea played by Yongtaek Kim is in irregular basis and is a type of music with opened structure with extemporaneousness and diversity. On the other hand, Samulnori played by Yongbae Kim is with a musical structure based on stress and relaxation that is regarded as regular and integrated music. Therefore, if incorporating diversified and splendid musical techniques of Byeolshin-gut in the eastern coast of Korea into Samulnori, it is highly expected for Samulnori to be improved with a new leap in the music.
