The main objective of this thesis is to investigate numerically thermal comfort and thermal energy transport inside a passenger car compartment for different A/C (air conditioner) operation modes and compare the thermal comfort models. First, the present thesis uses DO (Discrete Ordinates) model for radiation and considers spectral effects on the spatial temperature distribution in determining the solar loads. From numerical results, it is found that when considering spectral effect in radiation, higher cabin temperature is estimated and longer penetration of solar irradiation inside the cabin is predicted. It shows the spectral effect should be considered to predict the cabin temperature more accurately. Second, two different A/C operation modes are used for airflow characteristic in car compartment for summer season in which mostly vent mode and bi-level mode are adopted in the cabin for the current simulation. In the present numerical results, it is found that such stagnant flows are observed in the lower cabin area for the vent mode, whereas for the bi-level mode, recirculating behavior of air flows can be seen in the lower and upper cabin areas. It shows that the latter mode can reach neutral state more quickly in the cabin because of higher flow mixing. Third, EHT and Fanger models are used for thermal comfort, and they are compared each other together with CFD analysis. Even if the two models are showing similar results qualitatively, the original Fanger model fails to predict local comfortness in the cabin because it cannot consider intrinsically local temperature variation in the cabin. For resolving this problem, this study suggests two modified Fanger models, i.e., MFM01 and MFM02 models for taking account for the local effect of temperature variation. In fact, the MFM01 uses local air temperature and the area-weighted average of clothing insulation at each segment, whereas the MFM02 considers local air temperature and clothing insulation. From the comparison, it is concluded that both models slightly overpredict PMV compared to the EHT results, but they are able to predict the local variation of air temperature in the cabin. Moreover, as another alternative to the EHT model, the MFM01 and MFM02 would be useful in estimating the thermal comfortness in the cabin on the basis of CFD results.
