This study mainly surveyed women in their 20s to 50s living in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do area. For analysis data, this study used 154 questionnaires acquired through the self-administered method. After analyzing the demographic characteristics, perception of cosmetic foods, intake condition, preference, correlation with skin care and satisfaction, this study investigated matters that must be complemented for future development to present the direction for developing cosmetic foods according to consumer needs and to provide basic marketing data. Results showed that the perception level of cosmetic foods remains low as it only reaches 50%. Respondents also answered that they have often purchased products without realizing them to be cosmetic foods. 90% of respondents answered that even if they prefer a certain brand or product when purchasing general food, they have the tendency to change brands if the same type of product contributes to skin care. As cosmetic foods have been surveyed to present greater skin care effect of faster speed than natural ingredients such as vegetables and fruits, it can be said that cosmetic foods show high potential. Respondents perceived that in order to gain effect, products costing less than 50,000 KRW a month must be absorbed for a long period, at least 6 weeks. Also, the reason why subjects without intake experience showed a tendency to intake products in the future was because they believed that the product would adjust the balance between health and skin. On the other hand, the reason why subjects did not purchase or show the tendency to intake products was due to the lack of credibility and perception regarding the product’s direct correlation with skin care. The purpose of intake and expected effects of skin care were presented in the following order: melasma, freckles, blemish, moisture, wrinkle & elasticity, acne & trouble. Subjects purchased products in relation to its expected effect, advertising or brand awareness. Although 96.1% of subjects presented medium satisfaction level for the make-up base, the ratio of subjects that were satisfied with cosmetic foods (56.3%) did not present a significant difference from those dissatisfied with the products (43.7%). This is shown as an obstacle for market growth. Subjects that were satisfied with cosmetic foods were generally satisfied with the function, effect and credibility of the product. The main reason for dissatisfaction was the intake method. As subjects preferred regular food products (76%) to health food products (22.7%), the preference was higher for products presenting accessible forms, such as beverage or yogurt. Research results of this study First, in order to create a market for cosmetic foods, it is important to actively apply consumer demands related with price, distribution and preference. Second, an independent and reliable positioning that applies skin care factors in food products must be established to enhance the perception of cosmetic foods, which are placed in the boundary between food and cosmetics. Third, verified skin care substances must be strengthened in the regular food products of cosmetic foods. Also, it is important to provide a plan for fostering the credibility and brand power of health food products. Fourth, areas that must be improved to develop cosmetic foods must be selected based on objective proof data. Also, it is important to develop a strategy differentiated from existing health food and regular food products in terms of taste, flavor or intake method.
