The 21st century is cultivating the culture contents business as a core strategic field of the national economic development. Therefore, it is meaningful to identify the need of performance of classic music, the origin of modern music, and how it should be developed in the future. However, there are many studies dealing with classic performance and audience development, but it is in a current situation that studies specifically focusing on practical approach as to western classic performance are insufficient. Therefore, a particular approach in the light of commerce is required in order to expand the scope of classic culture. For this, planners or performers should produce artistic works that can satisfy the need of culture of art consumers and develop performance based on audiences. Hereupon, this study is intended to identify factors that influence on audiences for watching classic performance in order to increase the number of ticket sales as a measure of audience development for classic performance, provide up-to-date information as to current condition of ticket sales through a research of core elements needed for audience development, and ultimately contribute to audience development on a sustainable and practical manner for classic performance. In order to achieve an objective of this study, no hypothesis has been established, but seven distinct research topics have been made to efficiently proceed the study for increasing the number of audience at western classic performance. In addition, the conclusion has been drawn in the light of practical and specific perspective as much as possible via previous theoretical research, current condition of classic performance, and a survey. Selecting total 370 audiences visiting two performance halls in person; Art Center in Seoul and Uijeongbu, the relationship between frequency of audience watching classic performance and demographic characteristics has been identified. In addition, the statistical data has been provided to see what specific factors actually made audiences purchase the ticket after analyzing and classifying general requirements, and a particular direction that was needed to promote classic performance art market has been suggested. According to the result of survey, first of all, the proportion of age group in 20's was turned out to be highest, 35.8%, among all groups watching classic music performance, and the number of audience in 30's or above was turned out to be gradually decreasing. Among all, the proportion of student was the highest, 22.9%, and so on with those with specialized jobs and art-related jobs (performer) in order. More than (51.6%) half of the entire survey subjects were college graduates, and the proportion of subjects attending graduate schools were turned out to be significant (17.5%). This seems to be related to the highest proportion of student among the entire survey subject (22.9%). As for the type of experiencing the classic music performance, 99 males have selected symphony as the first priority (66.4%), and 130 females have also chosen symphony as the first priority, too (67.6%). As for preferred genre of the music, 94 males have selected opera for the first priority (62.3%), and 134 females have also chosen opera for the first priority (67.8%). 180 college graduates out of 249, 40.6%, preferred a ticket pricing more than thirty thousand won but less than fifty thousand won. The interesting fact was that 35.3% of those attending graduate schools preferred a ticket pricing more than fifty thousand won but less than a hundred thousand won. The higher the income of subjects was, the higher the frequency of watching western classic music performance was. In the subjects with an income level of less than three million won, they preferred watching performance one to three times the most. As for the subjects with an income level of more than three million won, they preferred watching performance four to six times the most. Secondly, as for occupational cluster of audiences residing in the city of Seoul, the significant proportion included students, those with specialized jobs, and office job workers. However, as for those residing in Gyeonggi-do, the order of occupational cluster turned out to be art-related job (performers), those with specialized jobs, and housewives in order. According to an analysis of level of education of audiences residing in the city of Seoul, 52.4% of them were college graduate, and 20.8% of them were those currently attending the college. However, as for those residing in Gyeonggi-do, 50.0% of them were college graduates, and 22.9% of them were high school graduates or below. As for an income level of audiences residing in the city of Seoul, the proportion of those earning less than a million won a month was turned out to be the highest, 28.5%. As for the one of audiences residing in Gyeonggi-do, the proportion of those earning both in the range of a million won - 1.99 million won and two million won - 2.99 million won was turned out to be 22.9%. However, there were more audiences earning more than five million won a month in Seoul than Gyeonggi-do. As for Seoul, it seemed to be related to a higher proportion of student among all audiences. As for the type of watching the performance depending on performance location (Seoul/Gyeonggi-do), 71.0% of those watching performance in Seoul have selected symphony, and, similarly, 70.1% of them have selected concerto. As for those watching the performance in Gyeonggi-do, 62.4% of them watched opera, and 59.8% of them watched symphony. Audiences watching the performance in both Seoul and Gyeonggi-do have selected opera as the most preferred genre of the music to watch, the quality of the performance as the highest priority in deciding what type of genre to watch, and an excessive expense as the biggest obstacle to watch the performance. As for the age group of audiences residing in the city of Seoul, those in 20's were 44.6%, and those in 30's were 20.8%. As for those residing in Gyeonggi-do, those in 30's were 26.3%, and those in 40's were 22.9%. From this statistical data, a higher proportion of younger audiences were shown in performance location in Seoul than Gyeonggi-do. Third, 241 survey subjects out of 349 have selected 'joy and artistic stimulation (25.7%)' as the first priority of motivation for watching the performance, and, for the next, 128 subjects have selected 'spiritual comfort (13.7%)' as the second priority. As for the third priority of motivation for watching the performance, 115 subjects have selected 'stress removal.' All the age groups except for those in 60's have selected 'joy and artistic stimulation' as the motivation for watching the performance. Those in 60's have selected 'stress removal' as the motivation. Fourth, audiences given a survey have selected opera (32.5%) as the first priority, symphony (27.5%) as the second priority, and concerto (18.4%) as the third priority. As for the preferred price of the ticket, the highest proportion was in the range of "more than thirty thousand won but less than fifty thousand won" chosen by 129 subjects out of total, and the second highest was in the range of "more than ten thousand won but less than thirty thousand won" chosen by 116 subjects out of total. The frequency of watching the performance within a preferred range of ticket price was 2.94 in average. In other words, they have responded that they would be willing to watch the performance at least one time but up to three times in a year. Fifth, according to the result of the study, 23.2% of the entire audiences have selected 'the quality of performance' as the first priority in deciding whether to watch the classic performance. For the next in order, 18.3% of them have selected casts, and 15.5% of them have selected the price of ticket as the priority. Sixth, as for obstacles of watching the classic music performance, the highest proportion of responses was an excessive expense, 70.9%, the second highest proportion was high price of ticket, 52.2%, and the third highest proportion was complicated contents of the performance, 50.4%. Seventh, it has been studied on what type of factors serves as the most important role needed for increasing the number of audiences for classic music performance. Research survey subjects have selected the price of ticket as the most important factor. 81.1% of the entire survey subjects have chosen this option in the multi-selection question. The 'joy' was the second priority, consisting 62.2%. However, 90.7% of those with art-related job (performers) have selected 'joy' as the most important factor needed to increased the number of audience. It is quite interesting that the perspective of those with are-related jobs or performers is different from the one of audiences. The fact that audiences have selected the quality of performance as a standard of deciding whether to watch music performance and an excessive expense as the obstacle for watching the performance reflect on people wanting to watch a high quality performance in an affordable price. Hereupon, it is assumed that lowering the price of ticket might increase the number of audiences at the performance. The result of this study will provide an implication and a directing point to those working in the field as preliminary and reference data to increase the number of audience of western classic performance.
