This dissertation is based on analytical studies of narrative structures and patterns on Films of Hong Sang-Soo. The main goal is to analyze ‘discordant pattern’ in the narrative and its examples to define the functions that are related to the narrative strategy. The discordant pattern, in this case, refers to combinations of coexisting different elements and factors that are difficult to balance together. Hong Sang-Soo’s discordant patterns in his films have a unique characteristic that can be differentiate from classical narrative cinema to ‘complex narrative’ cinema of non-narrative methods today. Hong Sang-Soo deals with different variables in irregular ways with the time and the casualties, multi-characters, the objectivity and subjectivity (memory or imagination) and ect. Although Hong has solid and complicated plots in his narrative structures (using time and memory, imagination and multi-perspectives), those elements creates vigorous deduction in story telling by avoiding rules deliberately. To argue Hong’s core agenda in narrative, above all, organize spectators experience through complex structures than its complexity in narrative itself. This dissertation reveals the methods of constructing cognitive experience of narrative through Hong’s narration work. Charles Ramirez Berg, who tried to categorize multi-narrative structures have determinated Hong’s narrative into his own classifications. The first, a plot based on ‘number of characters.’ The second, a plot based on a ‘non-linear temporality.’ And the third, a plot based on ‘subjectivity, casuality and free from classical rules of self-referential narration.’ Based on these categories, Ramirez Berg puts into first classification of a plot based on ‘number of characters.’, an incident when two characters becomes a prospect, into a ‘non-linar temporality based plot.’ Even though these two films have some properties that Ramirez Berg classified in his narrative category they do not fit perfectly into his order. The Narration in seeks for a ‘character’ and not ‘time’ when a plot is structured based on four segments of time related chronicles inductively. Moreover, in this film, dream, and imagined zone of ambiguous divisions intertwined with the objectivity and the subjectivity along with logically ambiguous action and narrative that lies upon each other. Although, was categorized in Ramirez Berg’s ‘repeated event plot’, this film also vaguely erases boundaries between the objectivity and the subjectivity by combining indifferences of time and memory. Hong Sang-Soo’s discordant pattern, which do not follow homogeneous variation and logics based on a storyline, throws out spectators expectations to create a confusion about the film. Hong Sang-Soo intentionally shows errors to derive from customed narration and habitual cognitive effects to construct his own narrative of ‘hidden structures and patterns that are waiting for to be discovered.’ By these methods, Hong turns his early hypothesis of ‘primary effect’ into an idle. Also, unlike other conventional methods of multi-narrative films with reconstructing fragments into one narrative in final situation, Hong Sang-Soo leaves as it is. The use of variables in narrative such as the time or memory, perspective and ect., are not uniformed in anyways and by combining two variables from narrative, paragraph and chapter, drives spectators to dynamic responses towards film narrative. In this process, ‘discordant pattern’ produces a special meaning as a cognitive process regarding narrative in its invigorate ways. The limit of narrative film and film conventions carries eccentric meanings when expecially based on multiple parallel story lines and its cognitive actions than a singular narrative story line. This dissertation discusses the ‘discordant pattern’ into three different frames based on two story lines interlock to each other in elaborate time line and study in chronicle or casual flow of time within the dual structure. The first, non-linear plot describing chronicles. The second, multiple variation effect on time and memory. And the third, the new configuration on order of narrative information. The narrative is structured to compensate towards spectators’ expectation on the narrative consistency. But, when the rule of time and principal of casualty shows will to combine, the narrative of Hong Sang-Soo defines the issues and encounters difficulties through out. His discordant pattern unpiles the boundaries inbetween the multiple characters and non-linear temporality, the objectivity and the subjectivity through out self-referencial narrative. The story, where multiple characters appear, tears down the boundary inbetween the individuality and the identity and recognize non-linear sense into linear theory. The Purpose of the narrative, therefore, lay down non-explainable structures and subjugate spectators’ perceptive mechanism into one pattern to create new perceptive mechanism on narrative without breakin away from it. When Art is nostalgic to a consumer’s experience, he/she perceives that experience as a symbol and believes the decision whether he/she can participate while it’s being interpretate as significant experience. Hong Sang-Soo’s main theme of the storytelling is to follow the whole process of making story line and in this regard, spectators are not simply mean as receivers but as players with the text. The deeper meanings lies here in Hong Sang-Soo’s narration when narrative information suggests and demands the ‘cognitive creativity’ as an agenda in current narrative discourse.
