The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of 12 weeks combined exercise(walking and thera band exercise) on pulse wave velocity, free radical and antioxidant properties in elderly women. Forty-one elderly women(aged 65~75 years) volunteered to participated in the study as subjects and were randomly assigned to either combined exercise group(CEG; n=21) or control group(NEG; n=20). Subjects in CEG undertook the walking at 50~70% HRmax for 15~20min/session three times per week for 12 weeks. Also, thera band exercise(seating 8 item) consisted of 3 sets with 12RM for 12 weeks(15~20min/day, 3days/week). Whereas, subjects in NEG were asked to maintain their normal life patterns throughout the intervention period. Statistical techniques for data analysis were repeated ANOVA and Correlation measures. The results of this study were as following;
1. The change of free radical such as d-ROMs was significantly decreased after combined exercise for 12 weeks. Also, d-ROMs was significantly lower in CEG group than NEG group after 12 weeks.
2. The change of antioxidant properties such as BAP was significantly increased after combined exercise for 12 weeks. Also, BAP was significantly higher in CEG group than NEG group after 12 weeks.
3. The change of pulse wave velocity such as lhPWV, rhPWV, lfPWV and rfPWV were significantly decreased after combined exercise for 12 weeks respectively. Also, pulse wave velocity were significantly lower in CEG group than NEG group after 12 weeks respectively.
4. In the analysis of correlation, there are significant(p<.05, p<.01) correlation between PWV and d-ROMs as well as between PWV and BAP.
These result identified that regular combined exercise are influenced in pulse wave velocity, free radical and antioxidant properties. In conclusion, the data from this study reveals that combined exercise for elderly women is an effective method to improve promotion health, aging prevention and cardiovascular function.
