The Effects of Repeated Reading of Picture Story Book on Language Expression and Story Comprehension of Chidren with Mental Retardation원문보기

Communication is a core issue as we are living in a post-modern society. Acquisition of language expression and comprehension is very important especially for children with mental retardation in order to live harmoniously within the community. With cognition and learning characteristics of children with mental retardation, reading picture story book repeatedly could be a solution as part of wholistic language approach. Picture story books are useful in ways of easy purchasing, catching attention and keeping the children’s interest. Also, through reading repeatedly, children develop vocabularies, able to distinguish pronunciation and intonations, and increase comprehension of the story. However, advanced researches were subjected to preschoolers and the number of studies on children with mental retardation were low. Studies on upper grade children with mental retardation are essential compared to advanced researches which were focused only on preschoolers or lower grade children. It was difficult to find studies on language expression and comprehension although both are closely related. Therefore, this study investigated to find effects of repeated reading of picture story book on language expression and story comprehension of upper grade children with mental retardation. The researcher observed three children of upper grade from an O elementary school in G province. The intervention for three children were conducted simultaneously and held for six weeks. Research was carried out in order of baseline, intervention and maintenance using AB design. During baseline period, the researcher measured language expression and story comprehension without reading repeatedly, then during the intervention period, the story was read repeatedly. Maintenance test was conducted three times in a row to find the effects of intervention right after the intervention ended. The findings are as follows; First, through repeated reading of picture story book, language expression developed quantitatively and qualitatively on children with mental retardation. Second, repeated reading of picture story book developed realistic comprehension. Third, the study showed language expression and story comprehension effects maintained to all three students. In conclusion, reading picture story book repeatedly to children with mental retardation developed language expression and story comprehension. The researcher proposes further study of other disorders is required and accurate measurement list needs to be developed. Key words: picture story book, read repeatedly, mentally retarded, language expression, story comprehension * A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Education
