The thesis of this study is a comparison of popular songs of the Korean race, scattered in South and North Korea and China, and an examination of social aspects of those societies. Through the comparison and examination, I find out how the lyrics are reflected by cultural/social system, common sense, and emotions of people as well. Thus, I make a generalization of the song history of Korean-Chinese, South Korean, and North Korean, examination of characteristics of control and controlled, and analyze the lyrics based on love and home-sickness.
Korean-Chinese have migrated from Korea to China and their culture has deep Korean roots. There is some differences from Korean as well because they have adopted Chinese policy, economy, and culture and created whole new characteristic throughout their immigration history. However, South and North Korean have shown extremely differences in many aspects. Although the music industry of South Korean was once censored by military regime, South Korea has had the open and liberal culture under democracy and North Korea has had the closed and oppressed culture under the despotic government. In 1990s, some lyrical music which de-emphasize propaganda function, such as Whi-pa-ram were spread in North Korea, but it was just temporary and unusual. Interesting thing is that lyrics of popular songs show different weight of the reflection of personal opinion or emotion based on the situation, time, and politics because the audience never listen to a song which is lack of the time and social nature. Thus, music is most effective and direct way to study particular environment and society of certain period. I therefore examine lyrics of popular songs as an object of study to figure out how the music reflects the society.
The music of Korean race had been affected by Japanese militarism and hymn during its late 19th to early 20th century colonial occupation of the Korean peninsular. From late 19th century, some moved to Manchuria, China and they acquired Chinese nationality in 1950s. During the time, they were often exposed to and greatly affected by Chinese music about revolution, war, doxology, and so forth. In Korean peninsular, music industry was influenced by Yenka in Japan. After Independence from Japan, South Korea had been affected by American music such as rock'n'roll, jazz, blues, and pop because of the United States Forces being stationed in South Korea from 1945 to 1948. By means of the various effect, music industry has advanced with variation of genre, liberal democracy, and high growth of economy, and they have created "Han-ryu" , recognized for the distinctive creativity all over the world. On the other hand, music industry in North Korea has specific distinction/function for political propaganda under dictatorship.
In conclusion, South Korean and Korean-Chinese music industries show similar characteristics in development: the globalization of the socio-culture. However, there is no outstanding change in North Korean music industry. Consequently, between South Korean and Korean-Chinese, and North Korean show exact differences in context of lyrics. Since various ways of creation and diffusion, it is decreased that poetry is used as lyrics. Specialization in music industry also demolishes the barriers among writing, composing, arranging, and singing and the integration of those becomes popularized. Because of secularization and vulgar customs, poetic beauty and style are faded but narration or description such as direct dialogue and action is the newest style. Also, foreign languages, especially English, and newly-coined words are now used in lyrics instead traditional and beautiful Korean language. Thus, the need of literary value of lyrics for academic study is decreasing and it is unfortunately true that the homogeneity of culture of the Korean race is disappeared.
