Abstract
This research aims to suggest the need of exercise program through investigating its effectiveness on alleviating and preventing musculoskeletal symptoms; and to utilize the result as an evidence to prepare a plan for managing the musculoskeletal disorders of those who are engaged in the beauty salon business. The subjects were divided into the experimental group composed of 23 persons who were working in three beauty salons located in Daegu and who had consented to participate in the exercise program, and the control group composed of 25 persons who were working in four beauty salons. Both groups have similarities in gender, age, and working conditions. This researcher personally visited the experimental group for 12 weeks from January 2, 2012 to March 30, 2012 and conducted the exercise program, and evaluated the pain scores before and after the exercises using Nordic-style questionnaires. The results of a comparison of the subjects' pain scores showed that every part of the body of those in the experimental group decreased significantly. In the control group, the pain scores for back, wrists and hands, buttocks and thighs, knees, ankles, and feet increased significantly. According to age, in the experimental group, those who were 25 years or under had greater effectiveness in all parts of the body except waist and knees compared to the group who were 26 years or above. A comparison of the pain scores by body part according to break time during working hours showed that those who had 1 to 2 hours of break had greater effectiveness in all parts of the body except the neck, compared to the group who had less than 1 hour break. Through this research, it was confirmed that exercise programs were effective for those who were engaged in the beauty salon business. Accordingly, exploring ways to provide exercise programs for every beauty salon is needed. Likewise, through regional beauty salon associations and educational institutions and seminars for education of beauticians, the development of exercise programs to alleviate the musculoskeletal symptoms of those who are engaged in beauty salon business should be implemented. The active participation of those who are engaged in the beauty salon business should also be encouraged.
