As modern people are exposed to a lot of stress and diseases from rapidly changing environments, they are actively participating in gardening to enhance their healthy life style and welfare. Green plants are the most fundamental element in the human ecosystem and plants have a healing effect on the therapy and rehabilitation of the human body and mental health. A series of efforts for welfare for the disabled are currently made, but the reality is that a variety of therapy programs including professional technologies are needed at rehabilitation centers for the disabled. Although studies have been developed and implemented on the use of gardening activity and gardening therapy for disabled people as well as the physically challenged. The reality is that rehabilitation centers for the disabled have very limited space which can be used for gardening activity programs. To date there is no case involving using the rooftop as a therapy garden and healing space. Disabled people urgently need a healthy outdoor environment, a rooftop therapy garden utilizing gardening activities for mental and physical healing. In this study, we examined the preference of spaces, facilities and planted plants and programs of the rooftop garden by surveying with welfare center's employees associated with disabled people to effectively use the rooftop garden on a rehabilitation welfare center for the disabled. Also, we targeted three places including Namyangju Welfare Center with a rural style, Seoul Community Rehabilitation Center with an urban style and Siheung Welfare Center with an intermediate style between a rural and an urban style and analyzed the difference of the preference depending on characteristics of each targeted place. According to the result of the analysis, it indicated that more than 50 percent of each facility recognized the rooftop garden and used the rooftop garden as a place for taking a walk and conversation. Also, it indicated that three places highly preferred rest facilities such as a bench, pagora and trash can regarding the preference of facilities and preferred ornamental plants such as a herbal plant and ornamental tree which can promote five senses regarding the preference of planted plants. Regarding the preference of spaces, it indicated that they preferred nature experience spaces such as a kitchen garden, experimental practice place and ecological wetland operating gardening programs. Therefore, it proved that the rooftop garden on a rehabilitation welfare center for the disabled can be sufficiently used as a rest space as well as a nature learning space for disabled people. In addition, it indicated that they preferred programs which can experience nature on the rooftop garden as nature experience was most preferred and gardening program was subsequently preferred regarding the preference of programs. Therefore, the rooftop garden on a rehabilitation welfare center for the disabled needs to be easily accessible and simply a rest space, but it needs to consider the diversity as well. Above all, it is very important that we need to design a rooftop garden which can allow disabled people to experience social contact and introduce a variety of activity programs. In conclusion, we suggest that we need to apply detailed gardening activity programs for disabled people on the basis of the analysis on a survey with targeted places and to differentiate a rooftop garden which can highlight a healing function as a nature experience and gardening therapy space for disabled people from elements of gardens.
