The purpose of this study was to investigate differences in kinematic and kinetic variation of upper and lower body among bag carrying methods during gait. Ten young women(21.7±1.7 years, 1.61±0.03 m, 57.1±4.2 kg) participated in this study. A 3-Dimensional motion analysis with eight infrared cameras (Oqus 300: Qualisys, Sweden) and Instrumented treadmill (FIT: Bertec, USA) was performed to measure continuous five gait cycle. The sampling rates of the cameras and treadmill were 100Hz and 1000Hz, respectively. Treadmill speeds were normalized according to Froude number of 0.25 and participants were applied to the familiarization period for five minutes with the treadmill. Qualysis track manager(Qualisys, Sweden) program was used to collect data. Visual3D (C-Motion, Inc, USA) program and Matlab R2009a (The MathWork, Inc, USA) program were used to calculate the variables. Each participant was asked to perform carrying a single-strap bag with three different ways: carrying a single-strap bag by the hand, on the forearm and over the shoulder on the dominant right side. Before participating the experiment, all participant were understood the purpose of this study and written informed consent were received. One way ANOVA with repeated measures was used to verify the statistical differences between the bag carrying methods. Statistical significances were set at the level of α=.05 using SPSS version 18.0. 1) For the response time for left/right swing phase and stance phase, there was a no significant difference between all bag carrying methods (p>.05). 2) For the asymmetric index between right/left lower limbs joint angle, there was no significant difference in ankle·knee·hip joint between all bag carrying methods (p>.05). 3) For the trunk absolute angle during gait cycle, there was a significant increase for the contralateral(left) side lateral flexion when carrying a bag by the hand, on the forearm and over the shoulder than normal gait (p<.05). 4) For the shoulder girdle elevation angle during gait cycle, there was a significant increase when carrying a bag over the shoulder (p<.05). 5) For the asymmetric index between left/right vertical GRF, there was a significant increase when carrying a bag by the hand, on the forearm and over the shoulder than when carrying a bagpack and normal gait (p<.05). 6) For the left/right lower limbs joint moment during stance phase, there was a significant increase in ipsilateral(right) side ankle·knee·hip joint when carrying a bag by the hand, on the forearm and over the shoulder than normal gait (p<.05). Also, there was a significant increase in both side ankle·knee joint when carrying a bag by the hand, on the forearm and over the shoulder than when carrying a bagpack (p<.05). Based on these results, it is expected to be a scientific basis in order to find the right bag carrying method. Therefore, it will help to prevent injury according to physical asymmetry.
