Recently, in increasingly many cases, ports have been constructed in
deep water to guarantee the optimal depth because of large ships. To
reduce the cost in such deepwater construction, vertical structures are
preferred. When windwave incident meets a vertical structure slantingly,
wave height is amplified and the stability of vertical wall is influenced.
Accordingly, to reduce the reflected waves and stem waves, the
introduction of perforated structure with vertical type slit to the part
where waves directly invade is common and generalized.
In this study, laboratory experiments were performed applying irregular
waves that are the wave conditions in the real sea for the amplification
of waves in case of the occurrence of obliquely incident waves under the
condition of a plain wall and a perforated wall. In the experiments,
distribution of wave heights along the wall according to incidence wave
angle, frequency and height of incident waves and filling of chamber was
measured and characteristics were compared and analyzed. Additionally,
distribution of wave height against a vertical perforated wall was
compared with that against a plain wall.
From the experiment results, the following conclusions were induced.
When the slope of wave increased, the relative significant wave height
along a wall decreased but the width of stem wave increased. In case of
perforated structure, the normalized wave height increased with longer
cycle under the same wave slope. It was found that effects of filling of
chamber on the reduction of wave heights were insignificant. In
particular, vertical perforated structures showed higher reduction in
waves by slant incident wave comparing to plain walls. It can be
interpreted that perforated parts reduced wave energy more efficiently. It
is thought that a vertical perforated wall is favorable than a plain wall in
that it ensures the stability of tow and reduces the motion of ships
because of better wave reduction effects.
