This thesis is concerned with Mencius and Hsün Tzu’s human nature theories. They are very popular and important theories about human nature. Especially, the core of this paper is to find out the basis of human nature they asserted. With it, I try to discover the connection between the theory of human nature and the theory of human viewpoint. which I am dealing with. From the comparative and integrating viewpoint, I intend to look out the contemporary significance on Mencius and Hsün Tzu’s human nature theories The apparent difference between their theories is in their viewpoint of human nature. Mencius argues that human nature is human’s essential feature which is different from other animals’ attribution. He holds that human nature is originally good from birth. He suggests the four minds as the proof, and give an actual example of feeling of commiseration among the minds. Although human has a good mind from birth, in fact, this can’t be proved by an experimental observation On the other hand, Hsün Tzu thinks that human’s innate attribution is the same as other animals’ attribution, and passion and desire are human’s substantial features. We can find Hsün Tzu experimented a simple thought for human nature. His doctrine of inborn evil doesn’t regard passion and desire as badness. He argues that the social confusion which can not control passion and desire is the very evil. He thinks the problems in mind than in desire can make the world confused. From the viewpoint of heaven, the foundation of human nature, Mencius based his logic on human’s good nature. Heaven is a decree not from the outside but from the inside, as it were, it is a divined decree. That means, when a result is not good we find the cause within ourselves. Here we can find out that the innate good nature is the basis of the doctrine of the Mean. If we want to study more deeply, I think, we have to study the relationship between“ The doctrine of the Mean” and “Mencius.” That’s why through the doctrine of the Mean, we can discover the root of Mencius’ theory that man’s inborn nature is good . Hsün Tzu criticizes the world viewpoint that heaven and man are one and thinks they are distinctive. His point is that man should make use of heaven actively. From the context like this, we can separate human nature from human endeavors. Human can control his nature with efforts. Human being may become bad due to passion and desire divined from the heaven, and the evil mind can turn good by his posterior efforts. Like this, Mencius and Hsün Tzu’s common premise is that man is an intentional being for value. They tend to interpretate that human nature may do good or evil, and exclude both of them. That is, they agree that human may be good or evil. At this point, their theories on human nature are not a determinism. The importance of Mencius and Hsün Tzu’s human nature theory is that through the investigation of human nature, we can grope the possibility of good deed, and a concrete alternative is suggested on the condition of human essence hindering good deed. And a controversial metaphysical premise subserves the basis of human nature theory. However, the discussion of confucianism based on the criterion of good or evil is still worth discussing because of its prospection for our future.
