As a general term of the soil and rocky materials, including sand, gravel, stones and rocks with particle size of more than 0.075mm to 300mm, coarse materials refer to mixed specimens composed of coarse particles without viscosity or mixed soil containing massive amount of coarse particles among viscous specimens. The coarse materials are non-cohesive frictional materials as a collection of rock particles, and the characteristics are different from those of fine grained soil in that particle size is relatively large, and change in material properties due to crushing occurs greatly. In addition, they have widely been applied in the construction of dams, high-speed rail, foundation of building structures, harbor breakwaters and artificial islands due to the superior compaction characteristics, hydraulic properties, large construction density, high shear strength, less subsidence deformation and high load carrying capacity(Korea Water Resources Corporation, 2001; QIN, etc., 2004). Since large structures constructed with coarse granular materials result in greater economic losses and casualties when destroyed compared to other structures, most of them are applicable to important national infrastructures. As a railway needs to perform the role of a lifeline in case of disaster caused by the earthquake or other similar calamities, the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs designated railway facilities as seismic class-1 structures. To implement correct interpretation and safe design·construction of domestic geotechnical structures, reasonable properties calculation is required over dynamic properties, stress-strain behaviors and shear strength, etc. In relation to large triaxial compression tests for the calculation of dynamic properties of coarse granular materials, active approaches to research has not yet been taken due to the difficulty of manufacturing large specimens and problems of location, cost and technology according to the design and construction of large testing equipment, which leads to the dependence on the foreign literature or very limited method using small triaxial tests in the design and construction of domestic large-scale structures, resulting in faulty design and construction due to the difference between domestic coarse granular materials and materials used in overseas study results in their properties, test methods and soil conditions. In this regard, it is required to secure study findings on the static and dynamic characteristics and accumulated data of various coarse granular materials used in the construction of domestic large-scale structures. This paper is designed to provide basic data on the range of dynamic properties, representative curves and prediction equations of domestic coarse granular materials used in the construction of dams, roads, railway roadbeds and railroad connections based on the results of large triaxial compression tests.
