The purpose of this study is to improve the meaning of teaching for creating narrative in Literature education, and to explore teaching methods for creating narrative through storytelling. In this way, constant communication through narrative storytelling can improve communication skills in the elementary school.
Literature education consists of educational activities that can improve literary competency, including the whole process of accepting existing literature and creating new literature. The ability to create narrative is closely related to literature competency, as narratives are created by reformulating the text or reflecting personal experience in the process of sharing activities with peers.
The focuses of this study are as follows : first, to associate the significance of storytelling as the premier method of creating narratives. Second, this study aims to design model teaching methods specifically for creating narratives, and to apply them to storytelling in literature classes.
To begin with, Chapter 1 discusses the need for teaching narrative creation as well as literature review.
Chapter 2 reveals storytelling as the major theme of this study, and reveals the importance of teaching creating narratives in applied storytelling. This includes reviewing storytelling concepts, history, and educational effects in order to examine the educational value of storytelling.
Chapter 3 analyzes pre-existing instructional models, taking their suggestions into account in designing a new instructional model which will be even more effective in teaching narrative creation for applied storytelling. The design of instructional models emphasizes the steps for preparing to share the story, sharing a story through ‘storytelling,’ revealing the story’s inspiration, reforming or creating narratives in part, creating narratives specific to the various kinds of storytelling, sharing and reflecting, presenting specific strategies and activities, and questionings.
Chapter 4 proposes an experiment to apply the suggested model for teaching narrative creating applied to storytelling, and analyzes the conclusion. One 2nd grade class is selected as the subject of this study, and the experiment is conducted for 5 weeks. Questionnaires before and after the experiment are used to analyze the result. To support this, lesson plans are provided according to 8 standard stories.
In conclusion, the results of teaching methods of creating narrative are as shown below.
First, sharing stories through story telling plays an important role in developing an appreciation of literature and creative activities. These creative experiences give students an aesthetic view of creativity, and in the process of sharing their own stories with peers, students can understand that their sympathetic bonds with others greatly affect the effectiveness of their literature education.
Second, students have a great chance to think about the meaning behind telling a story, and the importance of storytelling as a creative activity. This allows students to build up self-confidence to undertake creative challenges and have a positive attitude also.
Third, storytelling enable students to make their own stories, sharing a variety of personal experiences and imagination, which is a great way of building up students' imagination and creativity.
Fourth, creating stories as a basic human characteristic for expression gives low level students a great chance to ignite the desire for making their own stories. It is very necessary to introduce a new systematic program in elementary school curriculums which allows students to find creative ways of telling stories.
This study includes a significant benefit in that students can exploit storytelling to make their own stories, and at the same time learn to appreciate their work by themselves. Follow-up measures will be needed to utilize storytelling as a creative material not only for the lower grades, but also for higher level students in elementary school.
