Since the Industrial Revolution of the 18th Century, the acceptance of the Utopian viewpoint that the development of machines and technologies would improve the quality of life to guarantee an affluent future has led to the consequence of serious environmental destruction, energy shortage, ecological and climate changes due to global warming. According to the 4th report of IPCC in 2007, greenhouse gas (GHGs) emission caused by human activities has increased by 80% since 1970 and the world's GHGs is expected to increase by 25-90% (CO2) from 2000 through 2030. Such increase in GHGs (CO2) is expected to raise the average temperature of the globe by up to 6.4℃ and the sea level by 59㎝ by 2090. The environmental destruction caused by greenhouse gas is a global issue that threatens the survival of humankind and each sector is required to develop technologies and policies to reduce global warming. In particular, advanced countries, such as the U.S., Japan, and many countries in Europe, have conducted many studies on the technologies for new renewable energies and saving lighting energy and achieved the level where they can evaluate the technologies. Therefore, Korea is required to consider energy consumption in relation to global warming. According to the analysis of the 'Statistics on Energy Use' published by the Green Korea United in 2007, the increase in energy consumption of local colleges has been 3.7 times greater than the overall increase in energy consumption of Korea, which was 22.5%, for the last seven years. This manifests that colleges are massive sources of GHGs. Such as radical increase in the energy consumption of colleges has been caused by the fact that each college is building and expanding the buildings on campus and many argue that the increased number of buildings lead to energy waste and lower efficiency. In other words, colleges should establish specific goals and plans to execute to reduce GHG emission. The scope of this study on the energy efficiency of college buildings was the application of technologies in new/renewable energies considering the standards of eco-friendly building certificates and the efficiency of energy use through lighting density and lighting designs. For this purpose, this study researched the past year's energy use of college buildings that were recently certified as eco-friendly buildings between the beginning of 2008 and the beginning of 2011. Then, appropriate alternatives were suggested for evaluation among the various possible measures of energy-saving for college buildings with eco-friendly certification. More specifically, the following four methods of study were applied: First, literature study was conducted to discuss the possible changes in energy use for various buildings in colleges as suggested by various theories and preceded studies on energy efficiency. Second, it studied local standards and systems on the energy use of architectural buildings along with foreign policies and trends related to new/ renewable energy and lighting energy and legal requirements and recommendations. Third, as the use of new/renewable energy can reduce the use of fossil fuels and the subsequent GHGs, geothermal systems and lighting systems were designed to satisfy the eco-friendly certification standards considering that efficient lighting design can save power. Fourth, the trends of the use of new/renewable energy and lighting energy in college facilities were analyzed and the factors that can directly affect the use of such energy sources were identified to suggest possible improvement measures for the use and operation of energy in the facilities. In sum, the significance of this study was that it examined the college campus facilities that have been designed and constructed environmentally-friendly from planning to acquire eco-friendly certification, and analyzed the possible application of technologies for the use of new/renewable energy and eco-friendly standards on lighting density and lighting design for energy efficiency and energy-saving of college facilities. By doing so, it understood the energy consuming trends of eco-friendly buildings and suggested the measures to improve energy efficiency of college facilities.
