This study set out to investigate the demographic and job characteristics of physical therapist by the hospital class, examine and analyze the effects of each of those characteristics on the variables of job satisfaction, and provide basic data for improving the ways to help physical therapists increase their job satisfaction. The author in this study conducted self-administered survey on 389 subjects. The sociodemographic characteristics of physical therapists were analyzed by simple frequency and percentage, and t-test and one-way ANOVA were performed in order to identify levels of job satisfaction based on sociodemographic characteristics and working environments.
The results of this study were as follows.
First, the job satisfaction of physical therapists in primary, secondary, and tertiary hospitals was 3.12, 3.32, and 3.29, respectively(on a five-point scale), indicating that the job satisfaction of physical therapists in primary hospitals was lowest.
Second, as for sociodemographic characteristics of physical therapists in primary, secondary, and tertiary hospitals, those in the twenties were most in age. As for sex, females were more in primary and secondary hospitals while males were more in tertiary hospitals. Those who were single were more in primary hospitals, while those who were married were more in tertiary hospitals. The number of dependents was highest in tertiary hospitals and lowest in primary hospitals. As for educational years, graduates of four-year-course colleges were higher in secondary and tertiary hospitals. Wages were higher in tertiary hospitals. Many of the therapists were general employees as position.
Third, as for job characteristics based on primary, secondary, and tertiary hospitals, the ratio of permanent employees was highest in primary hospitals while that of contingent employees was highest in tertiary hospitals in types of employment. As for a total work experience and current work experience, “five years or less” was highest in primary hospitals and “21 years or more” was highest in tertiary hospitals. As for department responsible of treatment, thermoelectric therapy room was highest in primary hospitals and exercise therapy room was highest in secondary and tertiary hospitals. As for the number of physical therapists, 100% of primary hospitals were 10 or less, and most of secondary hospitals had 41 or more. As for working hours per week, “less than 40 hours” was highest in tertiary hospitals and “more than 41 hours” was highest in primary hospitals. The number of patients treated per day was highest in primary hospitals and lowest in tertiary hospitals. The number of beds in physical therapy room was highest in secondary hospitals. Experience of changing jobs was highest in secondary hospitals and lowest in tertiary hospitals. As for reasons of changing jobs, “being contingent job” was highest in all the three types of hospitals. The size of ward was smallest in primary hospitals.
Fourth, the job satisfaction based on sociodemographic characteristics of physical therapists in primary, secondary, and tertiary hospitals showed significant differences in age, gender, monthly averaged wage, and position (p<.05).
Fifth, the job satisfaction based on job characteristics of physical therapists in primary, secondary, and tertiary hospital showed significant differences in a total work experience and working hours per week (p<.05).
The job satisfaction of physical therapists were higher as age of the therapist was higher, a total work experience was higher, monthly averaged wage was higher, they were permanent employees, and they were higher in position. In conclusion, stable employment type and enhanced level of wage may increase job satisfaction of physical therapists.
The analysis results show that there should be progress toward the long service system by improving the specialized job environment of the physical therapy room to overcome the difficulties of job characteristics and making efforts on social welfare and individual specialization in order to help to increase the job satisfaction of physical therapists. More research and analysis efforts are needed to investigate specific factors for those follow-up institutional policy measures.
