The recent development in medical technology has brought with it an increased awareness of bioethics that promotes moral values and respect for life in a variety of fields. Nursing is focused dealing with human health issues, and nursing care for the physical, mental, spiritual, and social health of patients is based on respect for life. Reflecting on the bioethics of nurses may not only help to correctly understand and protect the value of patients’ lives but also provide an opportunity to reilluminate the role and responsibility of nurses as caregivers. This study uses a phenomenological approach to explore in depth the ethical implications of bioethics experienced by nurses. The research question “How do the nurses experience bioethics?” was chosen with the ultimate goal of revealing the nature of the bioethical experience of nurses. The data collection period for this study was October 2011 to October 2012, and the participants were nurses working in emergency units, ICUs, and psychiatric wards. Data were collected through 1 to 4 in-depth interviews with participant consent; the interviews were tape-recorded and transcribed by the researcher. The hermeneutic phenomenological method of van Manen was used for data analysis. The bioethical experience of nurses identified through the study revealed six essential topics: “hanging on to life,” “developing a meaningful relationship,” “conscientious attitude,” “perception of bioethics,” “acceptance of situational constraints.” and “personal reflecting on nurse life”. The meaning of bioethics experienced by nurses is related to the patient’s desperation and desire to hang on to life, which cannot be compromised, as well as developing a meaningful relationship with and attachment towards the patient, which started as a therapeutic relationship. It was manifested as conscientious attitude stemming from the implicit understanding among nurses while putting themselves in the shoes of the patients and trying a variety of perspectives out of consideration for them. In addition, there was a latent awareness of bioethics while agonizing over complex situations and ambiguity in the caring behaviors of nurses. Further, the meaning of contemplation of life for nurses was revealed through their acceptance of the unfortunate situational constraints of a patient’s life and their intervention in the patient’s life to witness moments of birth, suffering, and death. This study will allow nurses to become bioethically sensible medical professionals for humanistic and holistic nursing practices while contributing to the fundamentals of multidisciplinary research on bioethics and expansion of the basis of nursing philosophy. In addition, it may help in development of policy for the improvement of bioethical awareness and the formation of a bioethical nursing organization culture.
