Korea Creative Contents Agency estimated the total sales of contents business in Korea in 2011 to be 82.4 trillion won, 14.3% increase from the prior year. The total sales in contents business has increased at an annual rate of 6.4% for last five years since 2007. Among many cultural contents business, music is by and large the most successful "killer contents". If the export of cultural contents in the early to mid 2000s was led by TV dramas, it is music that is spearheading the success of the Korean Wave in the 2010s. The domestic music industry has been expanding rapidly at an annual rate of 6.6% since 2007. Despite the fact, many people hold a pessimistic view that the current success of the Korean Wave will rapidly start waning once the growth hits the wall. In order to guide the music industry to soft-landing and prevent a sudden collapse of music industry, the OST (original sound track) business is being proposed as a solution. In general, OST includes theme music used in TV programs, animation, game and musicals. In Gaon's Digital Music Chart 300, Drama OST category consisted 10.67% in 2011 and 11.67% in 2012. These are the largest shares following the K-Pop category. Likewise, in Gaon Album Chart Ranking (by sales), it consisted 7.49% in 2011 and 11.67% in 2012, also the largest shares following the K-Pop. The fact that Cultural Industry White Paper began treating OST as a separate music genre in 2008 suggests that the importance of OST has been already acknowledged in Korean music industry. Nevertheless, there have been a few researches conducted on Drama OST until now. The previous researches either focused on artistic approach or industry analysis on OST music that also encompassed OST music in movie and TV in addition to drama or conducted from the perspective of contents supplier. Furthermore, even the few researches that were conducted from consumer's perspectives treated OST music in terms of general music genre. This study examines the current outlook and production types of domestic drama OST market, which is growing in sustainable and stable manner. It also investigates how OST music is sold and consumed from the perspective of consumers. This study, by investigating the factors that affect sales of drama OST, examines the importance of drama OST, which occupies a significant share of music industry today. It then attempts to lay foundations that could be used to establish production and marketing strategies. In particular, this study examines the factors that affect sales of drama OST and identify which factors - marketing/promotion, attributes of drama, attributes of album, personal/environment - affect the sales of OST the most. In order to accomplish the goal of this research, preparatory researches and empirical analysis were conducted. Based on the key words and resources obtained from preparatory researches, classification of factors that affect OST sales was done and questionnaires used to conduct a survey to test and verify the hypothesis were created. Based on random sampling, a survey on 600 consumers who actually bought OST was conducted. 561 questionnaires were retrieved with 95.3% retrieval rate and 14 of them were excluded, leaving 547 for final analysis. Based on the survey results, data was compiled for analysis and statistical analysis was performed. The effective questionnaires totaled 547, 51.7% male and 48.3% female, with male share being slightly higher. The teenagers comprised 50.3% of the respondents, followed by people in their 20s accounting for 31.4% of respondents. In terms of marital status, single people accounted for 85.2% of respondents. In terms of education level, high school graduates and below accounted for 66.9% of respondents, and college graduates in 22.1%. In terms of income level, 20 million won and below accounted for 51.6%. In terms of TV viewing time and Internet usage, most people spent 1 hour or less, followed by 1~2 hours. The smart phone usage time was 1~2 hours, followed by 2~3 hours. In terms of the total money spent on music purchase, 5,000 won and below was the highest with 36.0% share. In terms of promotion and marketing related factors, TV and radio exposure, marketing and sales strategy, portal and music site exposure affected OST purchase the most, while release type and album package did not affect OST sales. In terms of attributes of drama, the genre of drama and its popularity affected the sales most, while producing types and actors did not. In terms of factors pertaining to attributes of music, the share of songs and original scores in the album affected the sales most, while participation of actors, recognition level of singers due to their participation in entertainment programs, participation of K-pop singers, participation of popular producers and music writers did not affect OST sales. In terms of individual/environmental factors, the influence of dram music genre, the singer's musical style, sales of album while the drama is being aired, and the influence of music chart ranking affected the sales the most, while the physical appearance of singers did not. Based on the results, the following points are discussed and some suggestions are made. First, in terms of marketing and promotion related factors, the release type and the composition of album package did not affect OST purchase. As it was shown in the preceding analysis of outlook and trend in domestic/foreign music industry, we can interpret this as the effect of music industry being restructured as more digital oriented one, which has led consumers being more accustomed to purchasing digitalized form of music than music in traditional format in off-line market. Also, consumers are purchasing specific music products, including theme songs and popular songs, rather than the entire songs contained in an album. Second, in terms of factors relating to attributes of drama, genre and popularity of drama had a significant effect on the sale of OST. This is because OST has a unique characteristic that other music products do not have, i.e., it is also a secondary product that derives from the original content of drama. The producing type did not have a significant impact on OST purchase. This is probably because OST album is usually not produced in daily or weekly drama series or producers are not necessarily interested in producing OST album, such as in mini-series drama. Third, in terms of album-related factors, the share of songs and original scores in an album had a significant effect on sales of drama OST. The result reflects the current trend in domestic OST production where the share of songs and original scores are increasing. On the other hand, the participation of actors, the recognition of singers based on their participation in entertainment programs, participation of K-pop singers, participation of popular music writers and producers in album producing did not affect OST purchase significantly. This is in contrast to preceding research results on factors affecting album sales and indicates that OST purchase is affected by attributes of drama. Fourth, in terms of individual/environmental factors, the genre of drama music, the singer's musical style, OST sales while the drama is being aired and musical chart ranking affected drama OST sales. In particular, the genre of drama music and the singer's musical style were the biggest factor that influenced OST sales. On the other hand, the physical appearance of singers did not affect OST sales much, indicating that consumers tend to place more emphasis on the singer's musical style than their physical appearance when they purchase OST. As shown in this research, the share of drama OST sales in domestic music market is in increasing trend. Commercial success of some drama OST albums has made many music industry professionals to become interested in producing OST albums or invest in them. However, the resources that are available for producers to build marketing strategies or album release plan are practically non-existent today. If this study could help facilitate further researches on drama OST, it will be a great contribution to continued success of the Korean Wave and development of strategies to preempt potential collapse of domestic music market. Also, it is hoped that, in addition to drama OST, this research will help promote studies on music industry in general and more specialized fields of music similar to the case of OST.
