The purpose of this study was to examine music therapy using Samulnoli. It's basically meant to provide music therapy for children with mental retardation utilizing four different traditional percussion instruments in an attempt to step up the improvement of their attention. The four selected traditional percussion instruments were Janggu, Korean traditional drum, Ggwanguari and Jing. The subjects in this study were the selected children whose intellectual ability was good enough to receive instruction at least. A music therapy program of 25 sessions was provided in the Samulnoli classroom at a welfare center for the disabled in Gyeonggi Province during a six-month period of time from February to July, 2012, once a week, 50 minutes each. The instrument used in this study was Conners Rating Scale, by which the attention of the mentally retarded children was assessed before and after the program. After an attention assessment draft was prepared, an assessment method was determined in accordance with the draft, and then a comparative analysis was made after they were evaluated in the 8th, 16th and 24th sessions respectively by the method. The results were shown in the form of a graph. During the program, Youngnam Samulnoli that featured fast melodies and gave a magnificent and vigorous impression was utilized. The children had a lot of interest in fast melodies, and this Samulnoli was of use for the improvement of their attention. Out of the six children, three had already engaged in Samulnoli, and the other three children had no experience to be exposed to that. The children who failed to adapt themselves to that in the 1st session got interested in it as the program went on, and there was a gradual improvement in their attention. After they gave a presentation in the last 25th session, they got to have confidence, to feel a sense of achievement, to find it delightful to play music and even to improve in musical understanding. They learned to cooperate with one another while they gave a presentation, and they became considerate and helped one another. They came to have a better interaction with their teachers when they engaged in Samulnoli, and they had a smoother communication with one another, which served to instill a positive mind in them. The best effect in this study was that the children made progress in attention. Those who didn't keep quiet in the beginning became stable, and they concentrated their attention on Samulnoli and became more interactive. There are some limitations to this study. As just six children were investigated, the findings of the study might not be generalizable, and only Youngnam Samulnoli was selected as the music that they played on the traditional instruments. Recent studies establish that Samulnoli has an effect on children with mental retardation in various aspects, but there haven't been sufficient studies to explore how to make use of it as music therapy in school education. In the future, scientific and prolonged research efforts should be made to prepare an effective music therapy in consideration of educational environments.
