Modern artworks have expressed author's intent by using various materials such as metal, stone, textile, and plastic. Especially, plastic has been widely used in modern artworks' materials due to its merits of process ability and mass production. In the country, value of plastic artifact is increasing but the field of plastic study is limited to industrial purpose. There is little study on the plastic artifacts considered objects of conservation because of its integrity except for the synthetic resin used as adhesives and hardners of cultural properties. Most of all, there are needed to understand material characteristics, degradation factors and phenomena for conserving and managing of plastic artworks. The misconception and wrong conservation treatment causes irreparable damage to artifacts. In this study, Identification methods of plastic were performed by SPME-GC/MS and pyrolysis-GC/MS using trace of samples. As a result of identification using SPME-GC/MS, aromatic compounds like a phenol, n-Undecane and alkane compounds were identified from polyvinyl chloride. And alkane compounds like n-Dodecane, n-Octadecane were identified from polyethylene, polypropylene. Aromatic compounds like ethylbenzene, styrene were identified from polystyrene, and diethylene glycol appeared in polyurethane based on polyester was identified from polyurethane. As a result of identification using pyrolysis-GC/MS, aliphatic alkenes compounds like a 3-Octene and phthalate(DEHP) were identified from polyvinyl chloride. Aliphatic alkenes compounds like a 5-Decene and phthalate(DIBP) were detected from polyethylene. 1-Hexene, 2-Hexadecanol etc. were detected from polypropylene, aromatic compounds like a styrene etc. were identified from polystyrene, and methylene diphenyl diisocyanate which is polyurethane basic material was confirmed from polyurethane. This study suggested that non-destructive SPME and pyrolysis-GC/MS are useful to identify compounds particularly polystyrene and polyurethane. These two analytical methods were expected to be applied for identification of unidentified plastic artworks before conservation treatment. As a result of artificial degradation test, polypropylene, polystyrene and polyethylene were most degraded in macroscopic. Polypropylene and polystyrene have largest differences in color. But polypropylene decreased slightly in tensile strength and surface degree, polystyrene decreased drastically. And most degradation conditions were UV and 50℃+UC, therefore degradation phenomena for each plastics were confirmed differently according to degradation conditions such as a light and temperature. As a expectation of this study, it can be used as a basic data for establishing conservation environmental standards for plastic artworks.
