The purpose of this study is to explore if forest activities affect the socio-emotional development of young children at child care centers. The research questions are as follows: Research question 1: Are forest activities effective for the socio-emotional development of young children at child care centers? Based on the evaluations respectively by teachers and parents, are forest activities effective for the socio-emotional development of young children at child care centers? Research question 2: How did young children at child care centers who participated in forest activities change from session to session? To examine the research questions, both the experimental group and the control group involved 13 three-year-old (five in Korean age) young children who had never participated in forest activities at child care centers, 26 in total. Forest activities were administered to the experimental group for 120 minutes per session twice a week for seven weeks. The control group received child care curriculum standards. To evaluate the effect of forest activities on socio-emotional development of young children at child care centers, the Infant-Toddler Social and Emotional Assessment (ITSEA) that Brigg-Gowan &Carter (1998) developed and Na (2006) translated for adaption was utilized for pretest and posttest. The collected data was statistically analyzed in SPSS WIN 18, and reliability, independent samples t-test, paired samples t-test were assessed. The changes of young children in experimental group were recorded throughout the researcher’s field observations and analyzed qualitatively from session to session. The following summarizes the major research findings: First, forest activities were effective at enhancing the socio-emotional development of young children at child care centers. According to the evaluation by teachers, forest activities positively affected the overall socio-emotional development of young children at child care centers. In the subcategories, competency grew, and all the internalizing problem behaviors, externalizing problem behaviors and maladaptive behaviors were less frequent. According to the evaluation by parents, forest activities effectively reduced internalizing and externalizing problem behaviors among subcategories of socio-emotional development of young children at child care centers. Second, according to the analyses of changes from session to session, young children who participated in forest activities while engaged in nature and playing enthusiastically learned how to perceive others’ emotions as well as their own by expressing emotions affirmatively or empathizing. The children solved problems through oral communications and displayed friendly social interactions with peers by offering suggestions for various possible solutions. The active physical activities helped improve the health, initiative and competency of the children, and resulted in more positive attitudes. Therefore, the results of this study have illustrated the positive effect of forest activities on socio-emotional development of young children at child care centers and will contribute to developing programs of forest activities that are effective for socio-emotional development of young children at child care centers.
