A Case Study on Art Therapy Using Clay to Facilitate the Development of Children with Visual and Multiple Disabilities원문보기

This study aims to investigate the effects of art therapy using clay on facilitating the development of children with visual and multiple disabilities. The subjects were two four-year-old children who are female, have first-degree brain lesions, visual impairment and the same developmental level with children under one. The treatment was given for 25 sessions (three times a week, from September, 2012 to October, 2012) in a kindergarten class of one of the special schools for visually impaired children in the city C. This study examines the effects of art therapy using clay based on the developing domains of the Oregon Project by proving the subjects enough opportunities to touch, press, rub, throw, roll, and squash clay on their own. The researcher figures out the effects by observing the subjects' reponses to each session, changes of the developing domains, and the teachers' reports. The conclusion from the test results and discussion is as follows: First, art therapy using clay affects positively on the facilitation of the development of children with visual and multiple disabilities. Second, art therapy using clay affects positively on school life of children with visual and multiple disabilities. Therefore, art therapy using clay improves children's reponses to sensory impulses by providing them opportunities to experience various sensory impulses and these sensory responses facilitate the positive interaction between them and the therapist through verbal and physical expressions.
