The purpose of this study is to define the tea life of our ancestors which was harmonized with tea, tea equipage and interest on water as 'contents of the total artistic culture' and to search for the root of the Korean tea life from the tea paintings which has lead the tea culture to artistic level by realizing the beauty of the tea and tea paintings again. In the history on paintings of Joseon dynasty which has been changed repeatedly for longer than 500 years, many painters worked more actively especially at the latter part of Joseon dynasty than beginning or middle of Joseon dynasty. Paintings works became active and diversified by the painters from literary circles and professional painters in the painting bureau under the Ministry of Culture and Education of Joseon dynasty. Writers and artists from literary circles in those days, which the artistic activities were diversified with the development of the many new social phenomenon, spiritualized the tea drinking culture such as writing poems and appreciating the old painting, writings or antiques while drinking tea in the open space in the nature, in his own library or in the garden to the art with an esthetic point of view. Many tea paintings drawn by many painter of late Joseon dynasty can be found from the National Museum of Korea(국립중앙박물관), Kansong Art Museum(澗松미술관), Hoam Art Museum(湖巖미술관),Leeum Samsung Museum of Art(삼성미술관Leeum), Korea University Museum(고려대학교박물관). Those paintings are mainly depicting the tea meeting, atmosphere of tea party or tea boy preparing the tea. The tea customs depicted in those paintings are clearly showing the life style in transient period and the sensitive change of aesthetic consciousness. Many of the paintings drawn those days are kept in good condition up to now and we may be able to understand the several aspects of the tea life of those days from those paintings. So author is focusing the 'Tea life through analysis and study of the tea paintings drawn in late Joseon dynasty' in this study and is reviewing not only the formality of tea life but also the aesthetic point of view. There have not been made many studies on tea culture in Korea so far. So it is very meaningful that this study is reviewing the tea life of our ancestors with different point of view through the study of the tea paintings which are capable of providing a lot of information. Painting is a kind of artistic genre which is depicting the culture and philosophy of those days best and paintings which can be called as a 'visual language' are the good reference in getting the specific information about the visualization of the tea life of the late Joseon dynasty. 'Tea painting' is being used in this paper as a terminology with a definition that painting depicting the tea as a medium to express the mental aspects intended by the painter and also depicting the elements useful for understanding the tea life or tea culture such as scene of preparing the tea, scene of tea party or scene of poetry meeting. With assumption that the tea painting is a kind of cultural code which is explaining the traditional tea culture in Korea, author tried to find the tea culture depicted in the tea paintings and revealed it by analyzing the tea paintings drawn in late Joseon dynasty in different angles and at the same time reviewed the aspects and the meaning of the tea culture. Firstly, author conducted this study using the specific historical documents which can be classified as records about the historical and artistic background of the tea paintings drawn in late Joseon dynasty. That is because tea paintings drawn in late Joseon dynasty are clearly containing the will of painters who tried to convert their concept and forms of expression to artistic code. Author studied the history of tea culture of Joseon dynasty which had merely appealed to the sentiment of nationalism instead of suggesting the specific facts by reviewing the tea painting as a reference of facts and by reviewing old documents such as tea books and tea poetries as a record and studied the unknown areas of Korean tea culture based on the facts. In addition, author tried to thoroughly analyze and reevaluate the tea life of those days while considering the historical background and ideological feature of the tea life of late Joseon dynasty depicted in the tea paintings, bearing with new understanding on tea and painting cultures and tired to expand the depth and width of the understanding on Korean tea culture. Lastly, Author expects that the tea paintings would get stable popularity as a 'modern artistic painting' and the tea customs of tea meeting, which was enjoyed by our ancestors who drunk tea in daily life and discussed the literary or painting, can be enjoyed as a culture by Koreans of modern days and can be conveyed to next generations. Key words: brazier(茶爐), tea arts(茶藝), tea boy(茶童), tea brewing image(煎茶像), tea cup(茶盞), tea-drinking(飮茶), tea kettle(茶罐), tea paintings(茶畵), tea table(茶卓), tea tray(茶盤).
