Fresh produces are usually eaten raw without cooking or heating, which may increase possibilities of foodborne disease infection. Microbial contamination levels of environment-friendly (organic and pesticide-free) and conventional vegetables were determined in this study. Each of 20 environment-friendly or conventional vegetables were purchased and analyzed for numbers of aerobic bacteria, coliform, and Escherichia coli and presence of E. coli O157:H7and Salmonella spp. According to our results, more than 6 log cfu/g of aerobic bacteria were detected from environment-friendly chives and lettuce and 3 log cfu/g of coliform presented on crown daisy, regardless of cultivation method, and conventional sesame leaf. Vegetables which contained more than 1 log cfu/g of E. coli were sesame leaf, crown daisy, regardless of cultivation method, and conventional lettuce and scallion. Environment-friendly and conventional vegetables did not show significantly different level of microbial contamination. However, coliform and E. coli contamination levels of vegetables tested, regardless of cultivation method, were significantly affected by season the samples purchased. Samples purchased in winter had significantly higher numbers of coliform and E. coli.
