This dissertation suggests acting methods corresponding to the characteristics of the film, which are different from those of the theatre, in order to help stage actors understand technical elements of the film and overcome difficulties that they may experience when they first perform screen acting. For the purpose of this dissertation, the technical characteristics of the film are categorized under four elements; i.e., camera, sound, editing, and mise-en-scene. And, based on the relation between the characteristics of these four elements and screen acting, detailed acting methods that can help stage actors act at the film in a more effective way are suggested. This dissertation views the characteristics of screen acting that is most distinctively different from stage acting as a micro acting method. Due to the micro acting method, which has been developed in order to correspond to a close-up shot, screen acting requires much more delicate and natural acting from actors than stage acting does. At the close-up shot, because actors’ face is enlarged to an unrealistic degree on a screen, they are not allowed to act with even slight pretense or exaggeration. However, they are not required to always perform delicate acting. At the film, the audience can only see what is captured through a camera shot; therefore, screen actors should adapt their acting methods to the size of a camera shot. In other words, corresponding to the size of a camera shot, they should sometimes perform delicate acting but othertimes perform exaggerated acting. Therefore, in order to skillfully adapt their acting methods to the size of a camera shot and perform effective screen acting, screen actors should understand the technical characteristics of the film. Furthermore, screen acting can be seen by the audience only after an editing process; namely, actors’ acting is complete only after it is combined with such technical elements of the film. However, such technical elements may also disturb the “inner truth” of actors. At any filming site, various elements that can disturb actors’ inner truth are found such as cameras, microphones, lightings, and non-sequential shooting for editing. Therefore, based on traditional methods to maintain stage actors’ emotion and various classic acting theories, the author suggests methods to maintain actors’ inner truth despite the existence of such disturbing elements at a filming site. The author also suggests, based on her personal experience as a professional screen actor, practical acting methods corresponding to the characteristics of the film. The cinematic truth is not for actors, but for the audience. Actors should understand the characteristics of the film so that they can more accurately deliver their emotion and intention to the audience. However, it is well known that stage actors often experience difficulties in understanding such characteristics of the film. Consequently, this dissertation analyses the characteristics of the film and its effect on screen acting and suggests solutions to overcome common difficulties that stage actors may experience in the film thereby helping them better understand the characteristics of the film and thus perform better screen acting.
