The Relationship between Children's Emotional Regulation Skills and Mother's Reactions to their Children's Negative Emotions원문보기

This study investigated the differences of mothers’ reaction styles to young children’s negative emotional expressions according to the demographic variables and young children’s emotional regulation abilities. The purpose of this study was to understand the relationship between mothers’ reaction styles to young children’s negative emotional expressions and their children’s emotional regulation abilities, and also examined the influences of mothers’ reaction styles on their children’s emotional regulation abilities.
The subjects of this study were 173 mothers of 3∼5-year-old children and their teachers of private early childhood educational institutions in Gyeonggi-Do. Revised versions of ‘Scales of mothers’ reaction styles to the young children’s negative emotions’ and ‘Scales of young children’s emotional regulation abilities’ were used for the research. Data were analyzed by utilizing descriptive statistics, t-test, F-test, Scheffe test of ANOVA, correlation analysis, and hierarchical analysis of multiple regression.
The main results of this study are as follows:
First, there were no differences of mothers’ reaction styles to their children’s negative emotional expressions according to the young children’s demographic variables. However there were significant differences of mothers’ reaction styles according to mothers’ educational backgrounds and ages. For example, mothers graduated from graduate schools tended to use supportive reactions, while mothers graduated from 2-year colleges or lower had tendencies to use unsupportive reactions. Older mothers were more likely to score the higher averages of all styles of supportive reactions than those of younger mothers.
Second, there were group differences only in young children’s others-regulation abilities, a subfactor of emotional regulation abilities, according to the children’s ages and gender. In terms of mothers’ demographic variables, there were differences of young children’s others-regulation abilities according to mothers’ educational backgrounds. For example, the children of mothers who graduated from grad schools had the highest scores on the others-regulation abilities.
Third, mothers’ reaction styles were correlated with their young children’s self-regulation abilities, but were not correlated with their children’s others-regulation abilities.
Forth, the mothers’ reaction styles to the young children’s negative emotional expressions had significant influences on the children’s self-regulation abilities, but had no influence on the children’s others-regulation abilities.
In conclusion, mothers’ reactions to their young children’s negative emotional expressions were positively correlated with the children’s development of self-regulation abilities; and the mothers’ reactions to the children’s negative emotional expressions influenced the development of the children’s self-regulation. Therefore, the results implies the parental education for raising awareness of the importance of mothers’ reactions to their children’s negative emotional expressions.
