The purpose of this thesis is to examine the difference in arrangement of the Book of Ruth in LXX and BHS, and its position and role from the Covenant Theological perspective. The Book of Ruth is located between the Book of Judges and the Book of Samuel in LXX and it is located between Proverbs and the Song of Songs in BHS. The academic world has continued to do research on these two different arrangements. The general consensus is that the role of Ruth is to connect the Book of Judges and the Book of Samuel, or to shift to the era of the Monarchy from the Age of the Judges. It has been shown through the expression, ‘a woman of noble character’, in the BHS, that the Book of Ruth and the Book of Proverbs are connected linguistically.
Until now, the positional and linguistic side of the Book of Ruth has been studied. But it has not been studied by the main theme of the Old Testament. Therefore, this study deals with the main theme, “covenant theology’ that penetrates the entire Old Testament and examines these two arrangement differences. The words ‘Hesed’ and ‘Goel’ are two important words that express covenant theology in the Book of Ruth. Through this study, it has been found that the perspective of ‘Goel’ is more strongly emphasized in the Book of Ruth, affirming the connection of the Book of Judges, the Book of Ruth, and the Book of Samuel respectively in the LXX. On the other hand, the perspective of ‘Hesed’ is more strongly emphasized in BHS, affirming the connection of Proverbs, the Book of Ruth, and the Song of Songs respectively. Through this study, it has been shown that both the arrangement of LXX and BHS are connected with covenant theology.
As a result, the arrangement of LXX is more stable and better than BHS because it leads to Jesus Christ in the New Testament through the genealogy of the covenant. The significance of this study about the arrangement of the book of Ruth is that was studied by main theme of the Old Testament.
