This study presents the development of a group counseling program aimed at helping parents with adolescent children adapt in a family transition stage. It is an action research which evolved into a practical program. While the existing group counseling programs are generally focused on interventions centered around individual problems, this study, based on the Family Therapy Theory, developed a preventive counseling program focused on family growth that promotes developmental adaptation in the adolescent children stage, which is the most difficult among transitional periods of family developmental stages. Consequently, in order to aid family transition stage adaptation in the adolescent children stage, couple groups were formed, which aimed at promoting the couples' growth and preparing for a change in their role as parents as well as for middle age life and beyond. Based upon the counseling program development and its implementation, a realistic and practicable transitional period program was designed. The research methodology involved practical studies utilizing on-site action research. Thus, this study is very useful in the field of counseling, being a pursuit of a researcher as counselor, who applied theory by performing on-site counseling services. Since the action research was consistent with the counselling process, the process of plan-execution-reflection-modification is natural and that was revealed by thick description. According to the mutual participants' utilization principle in the action research, in order to establish a connection between theory and practice, and to become a client-oriented theory, professional intervention was designed. Therefore, the number of sessions and total time etc. required in group counselling, were adjusted to fit the clients' needs and the institute's situation. The program development process developed as a systematic process based on Satir Transformation Systemic Therapy according to Chang-dae Kim's(2002) method. The counseling program's developmental process through the action research included involvement of professional groups and, for the sake of realism, accessibility, and feasibility in the action process, it included involvement of professionals, institutes, and participants. The developed program was modified according to the institute environment and was gradually implemented in two groups through the process of observation and modification. The span of the research was 1 year and 9 months and involved continual and simultaneous processes of program development, counselor training, search for and negotiation with institutions, recruitment of participants, execution and reflection. Practical knowledge acquired through the process was used to improve the group counseling program for adaptation in a family transitional period. The resulting introspection gained through this program's practice process, which was deduced by the researcher, is as follows: First, as a researcher and executor, I needed to be assertive in negotiations and be responsible for the role of a mediator and group counseling management between institutions and participants. Second, for couple group activities, structuralization was needed for safety assurance to be open. Third, for the practice of the group counseling program, appropriate activities limited to the given topic and sufficient time for the activities were secured. Fourth, the progress of each session had correlation and, when necessary, assignments were provided for next session's preparation or application in the family life. Fifth, there had to be a clear goal concerning activities and assignments, which was shared with the participants. Sixth, the executor needs the ability to apply themselves, respond immediately and creatively to a situation as well as the qualification of a counselor who can anticipate and deal with various group dynamics. Also, to make use of group dynamics, when the counselor believes in human positivity and the possibility of change, he or she can work with the group in a relaxed manner. In the process of theory application, the action research gained knowledge about on-site application as well as a inductive knowledge obtained through practice. Therefore, it was possible to support the training process as a group counselor not only with book knowledge but also combined with practical knowledge learned in the field. The significance of this study lies in the fact that in Korea it is the first attempt using action research method to develop an adaptation program in a family transitional period in the adolescent children stage. Moreover, it showed the continuous improvement process of a counseling program appropriate for the situation of institutes in Korea. Finally, through the action research, it suggested the importance of processing a systematic counseling program development. The group counseling program for a family transitional period offered participants meaningful experience, which was deduced by the participants as follows: First, the family transitional period program is a process of finding oneself. Second, it sheds a new light on each individual and family history. Third, it is a positive interactive catalyst for a systematic change of the family transitional period . The benefit of this preventive group counseling for families is that it assists in realization of a change in individuals and families within the family system. For this reason, both the counselor's and the family members' capabilities are important. Also, the family group counseling program can be used to help families become supportive by bringing out family members' resources, motivating and encouraging.
