A study on awareness and utilization of informational picture books among mothers with preschool children원문보기

The purpose of this study was to examine the awareness of mothers with children aged four to seven in Western age about informational picture books, their utilization of these books, sources of information and any possible differences in these aspects according to the variables of family literacy environments. It's basically meant to provide information on parent education as to informational picture books. Three research questions were posed: 1. What is the awareness of mothers on informational picture books? Are there any differences according to the variables of family literacy environments(academic background, employment, the number of children, experience of raising older school children and online intimacy)? 2. How do they read informational picture books for their children? Are there any differences according to the variables of family literacy environments? 3. What are their sources of information on informational picture books? Are there any differences according to the variables of family literacy environments? To address the research questions, a survey was conducted on 384 selected mothers, and statistical data on frequency and percentage were obtained to find out about their awareness and utilization of informational picture books and sources of information, and x2-test was carried out to see whether there would be any differences in these regards according to the variables. The findings of the study were as follows: First, as for awareness of informational picture books, they expected that it would be easy for their children to read these books, and they expected it to be of use for their children's studies as well. There were differences among their ways of looking at the importance of selection criteria according to the variables, and their opinions on the right age for reading various informational picture with different themes were different according to the variables as well. Second, their related physical environments were good, which involved the amount of informational picture books in possession and reading frequency. Their reading-aloud strategies for informational picture books were different from their reading-aloud strategies for narrative picture books. There were differences in the person who read informational picture books for children according to the variables, and their use of reading-aloud strategies also was different according to the variables. Third, the source of information that was most trusted and utilized by the mothers was the Internet, and they wanted to learn about how to read informational picture books for children and how to choose good informational picture books. There were differences in awareness of the usefulness of sources of information and in awareness of the necessity of education according to the variables. Based on the findings of the study, the following conclusion was reached: First, more intensive parent education should be provided for parents to correct their misunderstanding of informational picture books and read these books for their children in a more ideal way. Second, libraries, educational institutions and reading education researchers should try to provide mothers with more accessible, down- to-earth and concrete information on informational picture books. Third, the fact that interaction takes place in the read-aloud process of informational picture books should fully be recognized, and the kind of informational picture books that help preschoolers to foster their literacy by imitating adults who read books for them should be developed. Follow-up research efforts should be directed into the development of good informational picture books and reading education from diverse angles.
