Most of the previous studies on the family novels have been discussed mainly on male writers' and the case of the Korean and Chinese comparative study on the female family novels can be said to be still at the start line. Hence, this paper aimed at trying a comparative study on the female family novels in Korea and China. In doing comparative analysis on Park wan seo's 『Mimang』 and Zhang Jie's 『No words』, it examined women's reality awareness and their ways of responses per generation focused on the female-centered lineage structure. Comparative analysis of female characters divided into the 4 generations in the two works indicates that the aspects to cope with realities were clearly different by each generation. The first generation can be described as females who were ruled and suppressed by the feudal family system of premodern society in the mid-nineteenth century. Although they express their internal denial against the patriarchal system through the mentality of jealousy and contempt, they adapted themselves to their oppressive realities on the surface. They did not recognize their independent sexual identities as well as perceive themselves as independent human beings. The second generation women are characterized as females who were oppressed and sacrificed by the feudal marriage system of premodern society in the late nineteenth century. They expressed their denial against the patriarchal system through removal of maternity and sexual deviance but it was actually not enough to express their independent recognition in social values in those days. Though they came to have the consciousness of sexual desire and the recognition of sexual identities, they did not acquire their subjecthood as independent human beings. The third generation were females who simultaneously experienced the feudal restrictions and the influence of modern ideas in the transition period from premodern to modern society in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They expressed their resistance awareness actively by resisting to arranged marriage and selecting their marriage partners for themselves, but they lived their lives compromising with their oppressive realities since they started their marital lives. However, they had crucial differences from women of the previous generation in that they came to have their consciousness as subjects of women realizing freedom of marriage and financial independence. The fourth generation are characterized as females who received modern education and were grown as modern individuals in the course of modernization in the early and mid twentieth century. They pursued their love and liberation through free love and tried to be a mature human being through getting into society. They responded to women's oppressive lives with independent attitudes, but often felt frustrated and became disillusioned in their empowered and repressive realities. However, it can be said that they are the generation who got their subjecthood as women in the course of pursuing their love and liberation. This comparative analysis indicates that many similarities are observed in relation to their subjecthood as women and formation of their sexual identities although Korean and Chinese women experienced different forms of modern lives. Nevertheless, there are evident differences in Korean and Chinese women's recognition of family and marriage. That is, Koreans have family recognition to value blood ties more than pedigrees while Chinese have family recognition to value pedigrees more than blood ties. In addition, they have differences in that Korean women have conformed in marriage system and have conservative recognition of marriage while Chinese women have resisted in marriage system and have liberal recognition of marriage. Understanding these similarities and differences in the recognition of Korean and Chinese women will be a foundation to increase mutual recognition and promote deeper understanding between both nations of Korea and China.
