The Effects of Marital Satisfaction on Role Stress Recognition of the Pastorally Engaged Wife: Focusing on Moderating Effects of Spiritual Well-Being원문보기

The purpose of this study is to find out how the pastorally engaged wife recognizes role stress that she experiences as the pastorally engaged wife in and out of the home and church, and how she copes with it. The result of this study can be used as a valuable data to mitigate the stress of the pastorally engaged wife who is currently experiencing stress from individual life and marital relationship and the church community or is in crisis of conflict. In addition, it is expected to construct new counseling strategies to help the restoration of the inner and spiritual dimension of the pastorally engaged wife, and to provide clinical help to appropriate prevention and countermeasures against stress. For this study, a questionnaire survey was conducted on 194 pastorally engaged wives who were selected as random sampling and the results were statistically verified. Although the residence, the denomination, and the position of their husbands at church who participated in this study varied, the most of them are the pastorally engaged wives whose husbands are the senior pastors and minister the church with less than 50 members. Therefore, the results of this study can be interpreted as revealing the tendency of the pastorally engaged wives who are senior pastorally engaged wives but have fewer than 50 church members. The result of this study is as follows: Firstly, marital satisfaction and spiritual well-being were negatively correlated with role stress and there was a significant positive correlation between the marital satisfaction and spiritual well-being, as a result of analyzing the correlation between the marital satisfaction, spiritual well-being, and role stress. This result suggests that the lower the satisfaction of marriage, the more stress is felt in performing the role of the pastorally engaged wife, and the spiritual well-being reduces the role stress. Secondly, in order to examine the predictive power of marital satisfaction on the role stress, regression analysis was conducted, and the result showed that the marital satisfaction significantly affected the role stress. This suggests that the difficulty in the relationship with the husband is a factor influencing the perception of the stress experienced by the pastorally engaged wife. Particularly, among the four sub-factors of the marital satisfaction, marital role expectations were found to be the most influential variables for the role stress. Thirdly, as a result of hierarchical regression analysis to find out moderating effects of the spiritual well-being in the relationship between the marital satisfaction and role stress, there was the moderating effects of the spiritual well-being. This implies that the interaction between the marital satisfaction and spiritual well-being can reduce the awareness of the role stress of the pastorally engaged wife. In addition, among the sub-factors, it was shown that the roles of ‘marital role expectation’ as a sub-factor of marital satisfaction and ‘religious well-being’ as a sub-factor of spiritual well-being were effective in lowering ‘role conflict’ among role stresses perceived by the pastorally engaged wife. In other words, if a husband do not fulfill ‘the role expectations of marriage couples’ in marriage, if a level of religious well-being of the pastorally engaged wife increases when she experiences the role stress as the pastorally engaged wife, it is effective in lowering the conflict caused by the role of the pastorally engaged wife. The significance of this study is as follows: First, This study deals with the spiritual well-being of the pastorally engaged wife in relation to the marital satisfaction, and it is explained by the quantified results that the degree of the role stress recognized by the pastorally engaged wife is reduced. Second, it has made a significant implication for counseling for the pastorally engaged wife or pastor couple. Although it is not possible to eliminate the stress itself, it provides basic data for more effective counseling interventions and suggests the direction of counseling and education to help the recovery of spiritual well-being, especially religious well-being of them. Third, this study suggests that it is necessary to develop a program of cognitive approaches to promote the spiritual well-being of the pastorally engaged wife in the field of studying them. In contrast to the results of the previous studies, it was examined that the process of establishing a new identity and confirming the calling consciousness is important in the one-to-one relationship with God. Through this, it is found that the pastorally engaged wife obtains the power to overcome the conflict caused by the role stress and endure it.
