The study came up with ways to realize academic developments of the horticultural therapist education field, and systematic horticultural therapist curriculums as well. In order to achieve the research goal, the study, first, looked into the horticultural therapist registration systems in the America and Korea, and the horticultural therapist curriculums. Second, the study conducted a survey targeting 210 horticultural therapists currently working in Korea to understand the importance of and satisfaction with the horticultural therapist education system and education contents. In America, American Horticultural Therapy Association (AHTA) grants the certificate on behalf of the central government, and this certificate requires a degree in horticultural therapy along with more than 480-hour internship. Three colleges in America established a horticultural therapy-related department, and they are Colorado State University, Oregon State University and Rutgers University. 17.4% of the whole curriculums discussed 'special education' followed by 16.4% talking about 'horticultural therapy'. In Korea, Korean Horticultural Therapy and Wellbeing Association (KHTA) was the best horticultural therapy education center, and it would grant certificates for master horticultural therapist, horticultural therapist registered-gradeⅠ, horticultural therapist registered-gradeⅡ and horticultural therapist registered for well-being (as of Dec. 31, 2012). For the horticultural therapist registered-gradeⅠ, a degree in horticultural therapy or other relevant fields is required. If a person majors in horticultural therapy, one should earn credits from three medicine courses with more than 200 placements. In Korea, Graduate School of Konkuk University, Korea University Graduate School and Dankook University Graduate School have established a horticultural therapy-related department, and the courses would deal with 'botany and horticulture (33.7%)' and 'medicine (24.5%)'. The results of the survey on the horticultural therapist education system reported that 66.2% of all the therapists in the study believed more time should be assigned to the current horticultural therapy curriculums. A total of 90.5% suggested that extra education should be conducted as well. For extra contents to be added to the current horticultural therapist activities, ‘developing of horticultural therapy programs in consideration of horticultural therapy subjects’ was proposed the most by 68.1%. For the ‘questions to understand the suitability of the horticultural therapist education system’, ‘securing of expert horticultural therapy teachers’ earned the lowest score (M=2.76). The importance of the horticultural therapist training curriculum contents was examined, and the results reported that ‘developing and applying of horticultural therapy programs’ had the greatest importance (M=4.60). According to the findings from the horticultural therapist training education contents satisfaction analysis, ‘developing and applying of horticultural therapy programs’ was observed to be most satisfactory (M=3.61). The IPA grid analysis on the horticultural therapist education contents said that ‘Indoor plants’ and ‘horticultural therapy program methods(how to practice in the real field)’ were included to the first quadrant (keep up the good work) with introduction to ‘horticulture’ and ‘propagation horticultural plant and physiology’ gone into the second quadrant (possible overkill). For the third quadrant (lower priority), ‘special crops and medicinal plants’ and ‘flower decoration – floristry’ were selected while the fourth quadrant (concentrate here) included ‘horticultural and special education (children, the elderly, lifelong education)’ and ‘horticultural therapy pedagogy (teaching methods and curriculums)’ as well. What the study has found so far will be a basic reference when it comes to selecting of teaching topics for future horticultural therapists, and to efficient developing of competent therapists training-focused education courses.
