The purpose of current study is to research the effect of mothers’ roles on the Social Competence of the young children. This study aims to improve young children’s Social Competence and to provide the basic materials forparent education.
To achieve the purpose described above, following research questions were established:
Firstly, are mothers’ Parental Intelligences different depending on their personal backgrounds?
Secondly, are young children’s Social Competences different depending on their genders and ages?
Thirdly, how is the relationship between mothers’ roles and young children’s Social Competence?
300 pairs of mothers and young children (aged 3, 4 and 5) took part in the initial questionnairesurveys. The children were attending Early Childhood Education settings in Changwon. After the preliminary survey was conducted, 216 pairs who were attending 9 settings were finally chosen as research participants for this study.
The Mothers’ Roles were assessed in terms of roles of "Stimulating Development", "Nurturing", "Managing" and the overall validity was high (α=.863). Young children’s Social Competency included variables including "Self-Control of emotions", "Peer relationship", "Understanding of social rules", "Cooperation", "Respect", "Active involvement"and overall validity was high (α=0.950).
The collected data was analysed using ANOVA, Turkey test, Pearson Correlation by SPSS 17.0.
The research findings can be summarized as follow:
Firstly, the scores of the Mothers’ Roles were higher than average score in general and there were differences depending on background variables such as "Education" and "Employment": mothers with higher education and employed status had higher level of Mothers’ Roles. When specifically examined the subcategories, mothers of "35-40 years old", with "Higher education" and "Employed status" had the highest level of Performance.
Secondly, the scores of Social Competence of the young children was slightly higher than average. Difference was found only in genders: girls had higher levels of Social Competence than boys. There was no difference between age and the order of siblings. Particularly girls had higher scores than boys in the subcategories such as "Self-control of emotion", "Respect", "Understanding social rules", "Active involvement" and "Cooperation"
Thirdly, the scores of the Mothers’ Roles did not show relations with overall scores of the Social Competence of the young children but had some relations with the scores of "Respect" for boys and "Self-control of emotions" for girls. Thefinding demonstrated that the Mothers’ Roles had different effects on the development of Social Competence for boys and girls. In fact, the more "Promotion" and "Flexibility" the mothers showed, the higher Social Competence the boys scored. However thegirls were not affected by the factors.
The research findings concluded that the Mothers’ Roles had influenced the development of the Social Competence for the young children. Therefore, information needs to be provided for mothersin advance (e.g. before they become parents) to perceive their roles more positively and acquire essential roles and skills for parenting so that they could undertake their roles with confidence. Also, parent education programs need to be provided in order for mothers to build positive relationship with their children.
