Abstract
Research on the communication between working/non-working mothers of the child of infancy and the teacher
Kim Da jung Department of Early Childhood Education The Graduate School of Education Kyung Hee University
This research is about looking into a general tendency in the relationship between a mother who has a child of infancy and the teacher, and the frequency of the communication between them. Further, it looks into the relationship between a working mother and the teacher of the child and the influence of the communication between them. The research has enlightenedthe necessity and the importance of the mother-teacher communication and by looking into the relationship between mother - teacher relationship and the communication between them, the research has found how working mothers' work environment affects the communication with the teachers of their child. For the purpose of the research, I have set five research questions to be answered. First, relationship between working mother and the teacher, communication frequency; what is the general tendency of working mothers' work environment. Second, is there a difference on the communication and the relationship with the child's teacher depending on the personal background of working mother and non-working mother. Third, what is the correlation between mothers' work environment and the relationship and communication with the child's teachers. Fourth, how working mothers' work environment and the relationship with the child's teacher affects the communication with the teachers. The subject of the research was set with the 241 mothers who have a child of infancy which goes to the kindergarten, and the questionnaires were sent to each of them. Among 241 of them, 153 mothers were working mothers; the rest 88 were non-working mothers. For the research tool, Parent scale form PCRS(Parent-Caregiver Relationship Scale) which was established by James Elicker, Ilene C. Noppe, Lloyd D. Noppe, and Cheryl Fortner-Wood(1997) and interpreted by Lee Jin Hwa and others(1999) was used. Moreover, to check the frequency depending on the types of communication between teacher and mother, questionnaires for the parent from Ghazvini and Readdick's Parent-Caregiver communication (1994) which was adapted by Wee Su Kyung (1999) were used in more amended and supplemented form for looking into the types of teacher-mother communication. Among the questionnaires, time flexibility question about working mothers' working environment was extracted from the tool used in the researches of GuHyeRyeong (1991), Ha Kyung Mi(1991), Kim JiYeon(1994), and Yoon HaeRi (1996) and amended by ImMiRi (1997) in her research. With regards to the workplace childcare welfare condition, the tool originally extracted from the research of Park Seongok and Kim Jeonghun (1995) and amended by ImMiRi (1997) was used. To figure out the general principle of the subject of the research, frequency and percentage was calculated respectively. Further, the range of the score, average, and standard deviation was calculated for each research factor to figure out the general tendency of the research factor. T-test and one-way ANOVA was conducted to see whether there is difference in the mother-teacher relationship and communication depending on the personal background of the working and non-working mothers. Lastly, correlation analysis was conducted to see the relevance among the work environment, mother-teacher relationship, and frequency of mother-teacher communication. Also, multiple regression analysis was conducted to see which factor affects the communication between child's mother and the teacher. The results of the research are as follows: First, for the mother-teacher relationship, both working mothers and non-working mothers showed highest score on the "respect" item among 7 items; trust/confidence, open communication, cooperation, competence/knowledge, nurture, respect, intimacy. Communication frequency was generally low, and the method which showed highest frequency for the mother-teacher communication was a communication through child's homework book, which is non-face-to-face method. Second, for the mother-teacher relationship status, working mothers showed higher status than non-working mothers, and working mothers showed highest score in "nurture" item among 6 sub-items. As for the communication frequency, working mothers showed higher frequency than non-working mothers, mostly with a way of bulletin board or short notes. Third, among working mothers' work environment factors, the frequency of teacher-working mother communication is largely affected by the working hour flexibility of the mothers, not by work welfare factor. Also, there showed a correlation between relationship with the teachers and the communication, which means that better the relationship between child's mother and the teacher is, more frequent the communication is. Fourth, there was positive correlation that if the relationship between children's working mother and the teacher were good andamicable, there were more communications between them. Also, if working mothers can use the working hour with flexibility, they tend to communicate more with their children's teacher. To accumulate all the results above, teacher-mother communication frequency were generally low, and the method which showed highest frequency was non-face-to-face communication through child's homework book. As for the working mothers, mostly flexibility of the working hours affected the communication with child's teachers, and they communicated more with the teachers when they maintain good and amicable relationship with the teachers.
