Evidence suggests that kindness and social support are strongly connected to levels of life satisfaction. Although kindness and social support have been shown to be important variables in the maintenance of life satisfaction in children, they have yet to be examined in conjunction with one another. The purpose of this study was to examine social support as mediator variable in the relationship between kindness and life satisfaction. Results were based on a sample of 324 children ages 11 to 12 years. Data were collected by using the Character Strength Test for Adolescents(CST-A), the Social Support Appraisal Scale(SSAS), and the Satisfaction with Life Scale for Children(SWLS-C). The results are as follows. A significant association between social support and both kindness and life satisfaction was established. Results also indicated that social support fully mediated the relationship between kindness and life satisfaction; however, contrary to hypotheses, social support from friends did not mediate the relationship between kindness and life satisfaction. This study examined the mediating effects of social support on the relationship between kindness and life satisfaction, thereby ascertaining that social support of family and teachers acts as a connecting instrument between kindness and life satisfaction. This suggests that an approach and an education from a perspective of counselling for kindness and social support are important in drawing up intervention measures for enhancing children's life satisfaction. Implications for future research and limitations of the present findings are discussed.
