This study is to analyze effects of improvisation-centered music therapy on stereotyped behaviors and interactions of an adult with intellectual disability via single subject design. The subject in this study is a 26 years old male, an adult with intellectual disability of grade 2, who is using J welfare center, Seoul city.
The music therapy program was conducted in a total 18 times ? 40 minutes each sessions for twice a week from December 11th, 2012 to February 22nd, 2013 ? by one researcher and one assistant music therapist. In the early stage, first four sessions were conducted primarily to reduce stereotyped behaviors and to increase interactions, ten sessions were conducted for the middle stage I and II, and four sessions were conducted for the final stage. Quantitative and qualitative data analysis of this study were progressed by a researcher and two music therapists.
Results are as below.
At first, improvisation-centered music therapy brought positive effect on reducing stereotyped behaviors of an adult with intellectual disability. The Subject showed frequencies of 20 stereotyped behaviors in the primary baseline, while he showed frequencies of 3 stereotyped behaviors in the post evaluation, which was 17 decreased more than the primary baseline frequencies.
At second, improvisation-centered music therapy brought positive effect on interactions of an adult with intellectual disability. This can be revealed through the comparative analysis between the primary baseline and the post evaluation of records for interactions. The Subject showed frequencies of seven interactions in the primary baseline, while he showed frequencies of 121 interactions in the post evaluation, which was 114 increased more than the primary baseline frequencies.
In conclusion, improvisation-centered music therapy has positive effect on reduction of stereotyped behaviors and improvement of interactions for an adult with intellectual disability.
Through this study, improvisation-centered music therapy reduces stereotyped behaviors and increases interactions for an adult with intellectual disability, showing possibilities of more optimistic relationship with others within society. If the music therapy program regarding behavioral characteristics and levels of individuals for adults with intellectual disability is developed in the future for the use, more optimistic effect will be expected on stereotyped behaviors and interactions.
