The importance of piano education should be pondered over, considering most children begin their actual musical education through piano lessons. Depending on a teacher, educational environment and a method, children with infinite potentiality can not only train themselves to be able music experts but also make their entire lives rich in music. This study focuses on a ‘beginning textbook’ even though there are so many requirements for a successful piano education. Selecting a proper textbook is significant as a ‘textbook’ is taught and learned as the medium between a teacher and a student in piano education. The textbook determines the direction of instruction by limiting the scope of musical pieces, as prior to the instruction, it regulates the learning system and contents such as its goal, direction, character and conclusion. As the piano education at the beginning level affects the progression to the intermediate and the advanced level, the beginning text should be selected cautiously according to its composition and content, and it is very important to provide it according to the learners’ individuality and ability. Therefore, this study investigated what beginning textbooks would increase the effect of piano education on the beginning children. For the study, after selecting two beginning textbooks ‘Byer’ and ‘Piano Adventure’ and examining their compositions and contents, quantitative research was carried out to a student group and a teacher group who finished the beginning level using those two textbooks. The teacher group conducted evaluation on the two textbooks by answering the questionnaire, and the student group were evaluated on their overall musical development by taking the written test and the performance test. This study came to the following conclusions. Firstly, selecting a textbook in the beginning level can be impetus of enjoyable and effective piano education, if the teacher considers the learner’s interest, emotion and level, free from acquirement of performance techniques and composition based on simple skills of repertories. Secondly, piano education should constantly stimulate and reinforce the learners to enjoy music for themselves and participate actively, through the whole education to equip them with impromptu performance and creative power as well as a first view, an accompaniment, a transpose, singing at sight, and music dictation. Finally, ‘Byer’ is effective in improving the ability to read scores and performance technic, but an auxiliary textbook is necessary for the synthetic musicality development. ‘Piano Adventure’ makes students acquire every field of music and foster their analytic ability of musical pieces, performance ability and creative power, but its too many contents and slow progress can burden busy piano lessons. In conclusion, teachers should reach more effective piano education by selecting a textbook and using two jointly according to the learner’s individuality and level after recognizing merits and demerits of ‘Byer’ and ‘Piano Adventure’.
